Citroen C3 - Tailpipe

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Tailpipe for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Tailpipe

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Tailpipe for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Tailpipe

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Tailpipe for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Tailpipe

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Tailpipe for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Tailpipe

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Tailpipe for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2

Tailpipe for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Tailpipe for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Citroen C1 - Tailpipe

Citroen C1

Tailpipe for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

Tailpipe for C4 Picasso mpv

What Are Tailpipe?

The tailpipe is the last visible section of exhaust, running from the rear silencer to the back of the car. It is the coldest part of the system and therefore the wettest β€” combustion water condenses there and stays overnight, which is why perforation almost always starts at the tip and at the weld where the pipe meets the silencer. That is also why tailpipes on short-trip cars fail years before the same pipe on a car doing regular open-road mileage. Worth separating from a related complaint: black smoke from the back of a Dispatch or Xsara HDi is a fuelling problem upstream, and has nothing to do with the pipe.

Signs You Need New Tailpipe

Rust holes or flaking metal around the tailpipe tip
A louder, raspier exhaust note
Heavy black soot deposits around the outlet
A visible crack at the weld to the silencer
The pipe hanging low or moving freely by hand
Exhaust smell reaching the cabin

Common Questions About Tailpipe

Why is black smoke coming from my Citroen exhaust?

On a diesel, particularly a Dispatch or Xsara HDi, black smoke points at the turbocharger, a clogged EGR valve or injector faults β€” the engine is putting in more fuel than it can burn with the air available. On a petrol it means a rich mixture, usually from a lazy oxygen sensor or a manifold pressure sensor. Either way it is a fuelling diagnosis, not an exhaust one.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen exhaust in South Africa?

A complete system runs roughly R2,500 to R10,000 depending on the model and whether it is mild steel, stainless or a performance system. A tailpipe section on its own is far less. Ask through our form with photographs of the damaged area β€” a picture of where the rust actually is tells us whether this is a section or a system, and that is the whole difference in price.

Can rust damage a Citroen tailpipe?

It is the most common way a tailpipe ends its life here. Short-trip driving leaves condensate pooled in a pipe that never gets hot enough to dry out, and it eats through mild steel from the inside β€” which is why the outside can look presentable right up until it does not. Coastal cars go faster still. A stainless tip, or a stainless system, changes the arithmetic completely.

Why is my Citroen Dispatch blowing black smoke?

Almost always turbocharger wear, a clogged particulate filter or EGR valve, or injectors sticking on the 1.6 HDi. A diagnostic scan first is the right order β€” black smoke has several possible causes and they need different parts, so throwing components at it is expensive. A drop in fuel economy alongside the smoke confirms the engine is running rich rather than simply sooting up.

Should I replace just the tailpipe or the whole exhaust?

If the rust is genuinely localised to the tailpipe and the sections ahead of it ring solid when tapped, a single-section swap is the cheapest sensible route. If the silencer seams and the mid-section are crusty too, replace everything behind the catalyst at once β€” the whole system is the same age and doing it piecemeal means paying labour again every six months.
