Citroen C3 - Muffler

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Muffler for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Muffler

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Muffler for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Muffler

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Muffler for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Muffler

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Muffler for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Muffler for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Muffler for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Muffler for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Muffler?

The rear silencer is the last box in the exhaust and the one doing the actual quietening — inside it, a set of perforated tubes and baffle chambers cancel the pressure waves coming down the pipe against each other. Because it is the coolest part of the system and the lowest point at the back of the car, it is also where combustion moisture collects and stays. That is why the rear box on a C3 or Xsara almost always rots through at its welded seams while the pipe ahead of it still looks serviceable, and why a car doing short trips gets there years earlier than one doing open-road mileage.

Signs You Need New Muffler

The exhaust note gone loud, with a drone at cruising revs
A rattle from the back of the car over bumps — usually a broken internal baffle
Visible rust holes in the box, or soot staining around a seam
The silencer hanging lower than it used to on one side
A metallic buzz that appears only at certain engine speeds
Exhaust fumes noticeable inside the cabin

Common Questions About Muffler

How much does a Citroen muffler cost in South Africa?

Silencer pricing spans R100 to R2,800 depending on the model and the material, and a twin-pipe stainless rear box comes in around R999 at fitment centres. Pro Citroen Spares and our supplier network carry stock for the C3 and Xsara. Ask what material you are being quoted on, because mild steel and stainless at similar prices are not the same purchase.

Why is my Citroen exhaust so loud?

The rear silencer has rusted through, in most cases. If it has not, the other candidates are a cracked manifold, a torn flexible joint and a heat shield that has come adrift — each of which sounds different and comes from a different part of the car. Getting under the car with the engine idling and listening along the system takes two minutes and saves buying the wrong part.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen silencer?

Fitted, budget R1,450 to R4,650 at an independent for a quality stainless rear box. Mild steel comes in below that and, on a coastal car, frequently does not survive three winters. Stainless lasts around a decade, and it sounds better as it ages because the internal baffles are not corroding away. On a car you plan to keep, it is the cheaper option over time.

Can a rusty Citroen muffler be repaired?

A pinhole in sound metal can be welded. The difficulty is that silencers rot from the inside out, so wherever a hole has appeared the surrounding wall is already thin and the weld tends to blow a larger hole rather than close a small one. Exhaust paste and bandage will hold for a few weeks and no longer. Two rounds of patching costs more than a stainless replacement.

Where can I buy a Citroen muffler in South Africa?

Pro Citroen Spares and our supplier network carry silencers for the C3, Xsara, C3 Aircross and C5. For less common models, most fitment centres will fabricate a box in-house, which is often cheaper than a catalogue part and can be built in stainless. Send the engine code and tell us whether the original was single or twin outlet, since that changes the mounting.
