Citroen C3 - Pistons

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Pistons for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Pistons

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Pistons for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Pistons

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Pistons for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Pistons

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Pistons for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Pistons

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Pistons for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2 - Pistons

Citroen C2

Fast Moving

Pistons for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Citroen Berlingo - Pistons

Pistons for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Citroen C1 - Pistons

Citroen C1

Pistons for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

Citroen C4 Picasso - Pistons

Citroen C4 Picasso

Pistons for C4 Picasso mpv

A five-seat MPV with a panoramic windscreen and a lot of glass, which is where most enquiries start. The 2.0 HDi cars also bring steady demand for DPF, EGR and injection parts.

Pistons for C5 sedan

What Are Pistons?

A piston is not a solid plug β€” it is a precisely shaped aluminium casting carrying three rings, and it is the rings rather than the piston that do most of the sealing. The top two seal combustion pressure above; the lower one scrapes oil off the bore on the way down so it does not reach the combustion chamber. When people talk about a worn engine burning oil, what has usually happened is that the oil control ring has gummed up or the bore has worn. On the 1.6 THP the specific route there is neglected oil changes β€” carbon builds up, the rings stick in their grooves, and the engine starts smoking.

Signs You Need New Pistons

Blue smoke from the exhaust on start-up or on the overrun
A tapping or knocking from the top end, often loudest cold
Oil consumption climbing past a litre between services
Compression down on one or more cylinders on a test
Power and economy both noticeably off
Spark plugs coming out oily rather than dry

Common Questions About Pistons

How much does a Citroen piston cost in South Africa?

Single pistons run R2,150 to R2,300 through our supplier network, which also carries performance alternatives for people building rather than repairing. A full set of four with rings and bearings comes to R9,450 to R14,550 before any labour or machining. That figure is the reason a used engine is always worth pricing alongside β€” send the engine code and we will quote both.

What are the symptoms of a failing Citroen piston?

Blue smoke on start-up, a metallic knock that quietens as the engine warms and the piston expands to fit its bore, and oil consumption past a litre per service. Any one alone is inconclusive; all three together are not. A compression test showing one or more low cylinders confirms it, and a wet test β€” a little oil in the bore β€” tells you whether the loss is rings or valves.

How much does a Citroen engine rebuild cost?

A full rebuild with pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets and the machine work to go with them lands at R36,400 to R73,500 through a specialist. A used replacement engine through Pro Citroen Spares frequently costs less and comes with a three-month warranty, which a rebuild of unknown quality does not. On a car worth less than the rebuild, the decision usually makes itself.

Why is my Citroen engine knocking?

The timing of the knock is the clue. A knock that is present cold and disappears as the engine warms points at piston skirt clearance β€” the piston is rattling in a worn bore until it expands. A knock that is worst hot and grows with load and revs is a rod bearing, which is far more urgent. Both need the sump off at minimum, and the second one should not be driven on at all.

Can Citroen pistons be replaced without a full engine rebuild?

In principle yes, but by the time the head is off, the sump is down and the bores have been measured and honed, you are most of the way into a rebuild anyway. Which is why most workshops bundle bearings and a full gasket set in β€” the labour is already spent and refusing to replace a R400 bearing shell while the crank is exposed is a false economy. Price it against a used engine before starting.
