Of the big-bill faults that afflict Citroen HDi diesels and the hotter THP petrols, a dead turbo is among the most common — and among the most fixable. South Africa has no shortage of used and reconditioned units. What catches people out is bolting a replacement onto an engine without first working out what killed the last one, which is the quickest possible route to doing it twice. Lubrication is usually the culprit on the diesels: a blocked oil-feed pipe leaves the turbo running dry, so we push hard for a new feed pipe and oil filter at the same time as the unit itself. The THP petrol turbos — DS3, C4 GT Line, C5 Aircross 1.6T — are twin-scroll, thinner on the ground in local yards, and dearer as a result.
