Maintaining Your Citroen C2
The three-door C2 was Citroen's cheeky small hatch in South Africa in the mid-2000s, and the VTR and VTS versions still have a loyal hot-hatch following here. It ran the TU-series 1.4 and 1.6 petrols, plus a 1.4 HDi diesel. Every C2 on the road is now well over fifteen years old, so it is entirely a used-parts and independent-specialist proposition β and being a simple, light, belt-driven car, that suits it. The timing belt is the non-negotiable item: these are interference engines, the belt is a scheduled job, and a snapped belt on a car worth what a C2 is worth is effectively a write-off. The good news is that C2 running costs are among the lowest of any Citroen. Front pads, filters and plugs are all inexpensive, the car is light enough to be kind to brakes and tyres, and the TU engines are mechanically simple. What SA roads and age have taken is the suspension β front shocks, control-arm bushes and drop links are due on most survivors β along with tired clutches on hard-driven manuals and the usual coastal corrosion on lower panels and brake lines. The C2 shares much of its mechanical package with the Peugeot 206 and 207, which keeps the used-parts pool healthier than the C2's own numbers would suggest.
Common Questions About the Citroen C2
Does the Citroen C2 have a timing belt or a chain?
A belt. The TU-series 1.4 and 1.6 petrols and the 1.4 HDi diesel are all belt-driven, so the timing belt is a scheduled replacement item rather than a lifetime part. These are interference engines, which means a snapped belt lets the pistons hit the valves and turns a cheap car into a scrap car. If you are buying a C2 with no record of a belt change, have it done immediately as a precaution β it is the single best money you can spend on the car.
Are Citroen C2 parts still available in South Africa?
Yes, and more cheaply than most people expect. The C2 shares a great deal with the Peugeot 206 and 207, so engines, gearboxes, suspension and brake components cross-reference and are held by yards and importers. Plenty of C2s are also being stripped for spares locally, which keeps used mechanical and body parts moving. The scarcer items are VTS-specific trim and the model-specific lights and panels β findable, but worth asking about early.
What are the common problems on a used Citroen C2?
Age and South African roads dominate the list: worn front shocks, control-arm bushes and drop links; a tired clutch on hard-driven manuals; aircon that needs a re-gas or a new compressor; and corrosion on lower panels and brake lines in coastal towns. Electrical niggles like failing window regulators and central-locking actuators are common, and like every Citroen of the era, a weak battery or a poor earth can produce alarming-looking faults that are cheap to fix once diagnosed properly.
What is the difference between the C2 VTR and the VTS?
The VTR is the 1.4 warm version and the everyday choice β lighter on fuel, cheaper to insure and easier to live with. The VTS is the hot one, with the larger 1.6 16-valve engine and a firmer, more focused setup, and it is the version with the enthusiast following. Parts commonality is high between them for the ordinary service items; it is the VTS-specific suspension, trim and badging that take longer to source.
Is a used Citroen C2 worth buying in South Africa?
For a cheap, characterful runabout it can be a lot of fun, provided you buy on condition rather than mileage. Confirm the timing belt has been changed, check the clutch, listen for suspension knocks and inspect coastal cars for rust in the sills and brake lines. It is not a car to buy if you need absolute dependability with no involvement, but it is mechanically simple, cheap to repair, and there is a real enthusiast community around the VTR and VTS.
Other Citroen hatchbacks We Cover
Looking at other Citroen hatchbacks? We stock spares for these models too.
C3
By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.
C4
The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.
DS3
Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.
C1
A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.
DS5
A low-slung premium fastback sold in small numbers before the DS split. Parts are genuinely scarce through official channels, so most owners end up sourcing used or aftermarket.
Xsara
The pre-Picasso Xsara hatch, now effectively off the used market. Anything for one is a sourcing job rather than a stock pick, but the supplier network still turns parts up.
