Citroen C3 - Crankshafts

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Crankshafts for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Crankshafts

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Crankshafts for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Crankshafts

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Crankshafts for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Crankshafts

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Crankshafts for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Crankshafts

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Crankshafts for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Crankshafts for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Crankshafts for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Crankshafts for C1 hatchback

What Are Crankshafts?

Two quite different parts get called "the crankshaft" in a workshop conversation, and they sit at opposite ends of the cost scale. One is the crankshaft itself β€” the forged steel shaft running the length of the block that every connecting rod drives, present in every Citroen engine from the 1.2 PureTech to the 2.0 HDi. It is among the most durable components in the car and effectively never fails on its own. The other is the crankshaft position sensor, a small magnetic pickup at the crank snout or the bellhousing that tells the ECU where the engine is in its cycle. Without its signal the ECU will not fire the injectors, and the car cranks endlessly without starting. Establishing which one someone means is the first thing worth doing.

Signs You Need New Crankshafts

The engine turning over healthily but refusing to fire at all
Random stalling, then a normal restart twenty minutes later once things cool
Intermittent misfires with P0335 or P0336 stored
The rev counter dropping to zero or flicking about while driving
A deep knock from low in the engine β€” this one is the shaft, not the sensor
Metal particles found in the oil at a drain

Common Questions About Crankshafts

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen crankshaft?

The two answers are worlds apart, which is why we always ask which you mean. Replacing the crankshaft is an engine-out rebuild with machining involved and is priced accordingly β€” on an older car a good used engine usually wins that comparison. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is roughly R65 to R550 through our network plus under an hour of labour. If a workshop has quoted a large number, confirm which part was actually diagnosed.

What are the symptoms of a bad crankshaft sensor?

The signature fault is heat-related: the car starts fine cold, runs, then cuts out after a period of driving and refuses to restart until it has cooled for twenty minutes or so. Alongside that you get intermittent misfires and P0335 or P0336 codes. On the C2 and C3 1.4 HDi, corrosion in the sensor connector produces the same symptoms as a failed sensor, so unplug and inspect the pins before buying anything β€” it is occasionally just a clean and a re-seat.

Can I drive my Citroen with a faulty crankshaft sensor?

Not with any confidence. The ECU cannot fire injectors or ignition without crank position, so when that signal drops the engine stops immediately β€” no warning, no limp mode, and no power steering assistance once it has. A sensor that only misbehaves when hot will pick the worst possible moment eventually. It is a cheap part and a short job, and there is no argument for nursing it.

How much does a Citroen crankshaft sensor cost in South Africa?

Roughly R65 to R550 depending on the model and the brand, which is a wide band for a small part β€” the difference is largely between a generic unit and a Bosch or Valeo one built to the original specification. On a sensor that will strand you when it fails, the branded one is worth the difference. Labour is usually under an hour. Send the VIN and we will confirm the exact part before it is ordered.

What causes a Citroen crankshaft to fail?

Very little, directly. The shaft is extremely strong, and when one is damaged it is almost always the consequence of something else β€” oil starvation that destroyed a big-end bearing, a serious overheat, or a rod failure that has already taken the engine with it. By the time the crank is the problem the decision has usually become engine replacement rather than crank replacement. The sensor is the opposite case: it simply ages, and heat and connector corrosion finish it.
