Citroen C3 - Exhaust Hangers

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Exhaust Hangers for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Exhaust Hangers

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Exhaust Hangers for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Exhaust Hangers

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Exhaust Hangers for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Exhaust Hangers

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Exhaust Hangers for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Exhaust Hangers

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Exhaust Hangers for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Exhaust Hangers for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Exhaust Hangers for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Exhaust Hangers for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

What Are Exhaust Hangers?

The whole exhaust system β€” several kilograms of steel from the flexible joint back to the rear silencer β€” hangs from the underbody on a handful of rubber rings no bigger than a bracelet. They are deliberately rubber rather than metal, because the exhaust has to be allowed to move as the engine rocks on its mounts and as the system expands with heat. Rubber perishes, and ours perishes faster: heat from above, UV and ozone from below, and a speed bump every few hundred metres. Lose one hanger and the load redistributes onto its neighbours, so a single failure tends to be followed by others within months.

Signs You Need New Exhaust Hangers

A knock or rattle from the exhaust over speed bumps and driveways
The rear silencer visibly sitting lower on one side than the other
Exhaust vibration coming through the floor at idle that was not there before
A rubber ring split along its seam when inspected on a hoist
The exhaust catching on the driveway lip it used to clear
A bare metal hook where a rubber used to be

Common Questions About Exhaust Hangers

How much does a Citroen exhaust hanger cost?

A single rubber ring costs about what a coffee does, which makes them one of the few genuinely trivial purchases in car maintenance. Because they are so cheap, the sensible approach is to replace all of them whenever any part of the exhaust is off the car β€” the labour is already being paid for and the remaining originals are the same age as the one that failed. Send the VIN and we will quote a set rather than a single.

Why is my Citroen exhaust rattling?

A failed hanger, roughly nine times out of ten, letting the silencer or a pipe touch the chassis or a heat shield. The other three candidates are a broken baffle inside the silencer, which sounds like loose change in a tin; a torn flexible joint; and a clamp that has slipped. All four are visible on a hoist in a couple of minutes, so this is one fault worth having identified rather than guessed at β€” the fixes range from a few rand to a few thousand.

How do I know if my exhaust rubber mount is broken?

Lift the section by hand with the car cold. A healthy hanger holds it up; a failed one lets the section drop noticeably and you can feel the difference immediately. Usually the split is visible too, running along the join in the rubber ring. On the Xsara and C3 Aircross the rear box is heavy enough that losing one hanger drops it onto the rear axle beam, which you will hear over the next speed bump.

Where can I buy Citroen exhaust rubber hangers in South Africa?

We source hangers nationally and the C2, C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross rubbers are common stock that ships same day. They are not all the same shape or thickness within a single system, so a photo of the existing hanger and its position under the car is worth more than a model name here. Send the VIN and the photo and we will get the right ones out to you.
