On a diesel, particularly a Dispatch or Xsara HDi, black smoke points at the turbocharger, a clogged EGR valve or injector faults — the engine is putting in more fuel than it can burn with the air available. On a petrol it means a rich mixture, usually from a lazy oxygen sensor or a manifold pressure sensor. Either way it is a fuelling diagnosis, not an exhaust one.

A complete system runs roughly R2,500 to R10,000 depending on the model and whether it is mild steel, stainless or a performance system. A tailpipe section on its own is far less. Ask through our form with photographs of the damaged area — a picture of where the rust actually is tells us whether this is a section or a system, and that is the whole difference in price.

It is the most common way a tailpipe ends its life here. Short-trip driving leaves condensate pooled in a pipe that never gets hot enough to dry out, and it eats through mild steel from the inside — which is why the outside can look presentable right up until it does not. Coastal cars go faster still. A stainless tip, or a stainless system, changes the arithmetic completely.

Almost always turbocharger wear, a clogged particulate filter or EGR valve, or injectors sticking on the 1.6 HDi. A diagnostic scan first is the right order — black smoke has several possible causes and they need different parts, so throwing components at it is expensive. A drop in fuel economy alongside the smoke confirms the engine is running rich rather than simply sooting up.

If the rust is genuinely localised to the tailpipe and the sections ahead of it ring solid when tapped, a single-section swap is the cheapest sensible route. If the silencer seams and the mid-section are crusty too, replace everything behind the catalyst at once — the whole system is the same age and doing it piecemeal means paying labour again every six months.
