Citroen C3 - Resonator

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Resonator for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Resonator

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Resonator for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Resonator

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Resonator for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Resonator

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Resonator for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Resonator

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Resonator for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Resonator for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Resonator for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Resonator for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

What Are Resonator?

A resonator is a tuned chamber welded into the exhaust between the catalyst and the rear silencer, and it works differently from the silencer it sits ahead of. Where a silencer reduces overall loudness by forcing gas through baffles, a resonator cancels one specific frequency β€” the drone that would otherwise arrive in the cabin at a particular engine speed β€” by sending part of the wave back out of phase with itself. Which is why removing one does not make a car louder so much as it makes it tiring. They fail from the inside, corroded by condensate on short trips, and from the outside after a few winters of road spray.

Signs You Need New Resonator

The exhaust note louder and coarser at idle and at cruise
A rattle or buzz from under the floor under acceleration
A drone at open-road speed that was not there before
Rust perforation or splits along the canister seams
Exhaust smell reaching the cabin
A section visibly hanging lower than the rest of the system

Common Questions About Resonator

What are the symptoms of a failing exhaust resonator on a Citroen?

You hear it before you see it β€” a raspier, louder note, a rattle over bumps and often a mid-range drone that makes long trips wearing. Underneath, look for perforation along the welded seams and pinholes where condensate has eaten through from inside. The drone is the diagnostic one, because that is precisely the frequency the resonator existed to cancel.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen exhaust resonator?

It depends on whether your car uses a bolt-in section or a welded one, and on whether a used or aftermarket part is available for the model. Rather than quote a generic figure that would be wrong for most cars, ask through our form with your model and engine code and we will price the actual section plus fitting. On many cars a fabricated replacement is the better buy.

Where is the resonator located on a Citroen exhaust?

Midway along the system, between the catalytic converter and the rear silencer, usually under the floor toward the back of the cabin. On the C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross it is the smaller canister sitting ahead of the larger rear box β€” if you are looking under the car and see two boxes, the front one is the resonator.

Can I drive my Citroen with a bad resonator?

In the short term yes, because a failed resonator affects noise rather than how the car drives. Two things argue against leaving it. A resonator that has rusted through is usually the first section of a system that is uniformly tired, so the rest is close behind. And a corroded section can break away and drop onto the road, which is both a hazard and a roadworthy failure.

What is the difference between a resonator and a muffler?

The silencer is the main box and reduces overall volume across the whole range of frequencies. The resonator is smaller and tuned to cancel one specific frequency β€” the booming drone that appears at a particular engine speed and would otherwise make the cabin unpleasant. Citroens generally have both, working in series, and each does a job the other cannot.
