Ask a franchise dealer to quote an engine and the number often exceeds what the car is worth. A tested used or reconditioned unit puts that back within reach. It also has to come from somewhere: Citroen pulled out of South Africa at the end of 2016, so factory supply for a 2001-2016 car has thinned right out, and that is the gap our 12,000-contact network exists to fill. What you pay tracks the engine family. Small PureTech petrols in the C1, C3 and Xsara sit at the affordable end; the 1.6 petrol, the 2.0 EW10 and the HDi diesels step up from there. Two things are worth budgeting for beyond the block itself. Carbon on the intake valves is a known THP turbo-petrol trait, so a reconditioned cylinder head carrying fresh valves frequently pays for itself. On the HDi diesels the turbocharger and its oil-feed pipe belong in the same conversation — renew the pipe and the filters as you fit, and the new engine stands a far better chance.
