Maintaining Your Citroen C4
The Citroen C4 was sold in South Africa through the 2000s and early 2010s as a five-door and as the distinctive Coupe, and almost every survivor is now a used-parts car rather than a dealer-serviced one. Locally it ran the 1.6 VTi petrol (the EP6 engine Citroen developed with BMW), the 1.6 HDi diesel, and larger HDi derivatives. Which engine you have matters enormously for running costs. The 1.6 VTi uses a timing chain β no scheduled replacement, but stretch, worn guides and a failing tensioner are the best-documented fault on this engine, and a rattle on cold start is the warning. The HDi diesels use a timing belt that absolutely is a scheduled job. Typical C4 wear items are affordable but the car asks more of its owner than a small hatch. Front pads generally need doing around 45,000-60,000 km and front shocks are worth inspecting from 80,000 km on our roads. The two big-ticket items to watch are the turbo on the 1.6 HDi β where a carbon-blocked oil-feed pipe, not the turbo itself, is usually the culprit β and the BSI module, which controls the car's electrics and is unhappy about water getting in at the scuttle. Parts supply is decent because the C4 shares its running gear with the Peugeot 307 and 308, so a lot of what you need is catalogued under a Peugeot number.
Common Questions About the Citroen C4
Does the Citroen C4 have a timing belt or a chain?
The 1.6 VTi and THP petrol engines (EP6) use a timing chain, so there is no scheduled belt bill β but the chain, guides and tensioner are a known wear point on this engine and a 1-3 second rattle from the front of the engine on cold start means it needs attention urgently. The HDi diesels use a timing belt with a proper replacement interval; if there is no record of it having been done, treat it as due. Confirm which engine you have before assuming anything.
Why does my Citroen C4 have random electrical faults?
That pattern β several unrelated warning lights, doors that will not lock, a car that seems asleep β is the classic sign of a BSI problem. The BSI (Built-in Systems Interface) is the central body-control module that runs the lighting, locking, comfort systems and the car's internal network. Water getting in at the scuttle or the footwell and a tired or failing battery are the two most common triggers, and both are far cheaper to fix than the module. Have those checked before anyone condemns the BSI.
Is the 1.6 HDi diesel C4 expensive to keep running?
Not inherently, but it has a known weak spot worth budgeting for. The turbo on the 1.6 HDi is fed by a narrow oil pipe that blocks with carbon over time, and once it does the turbo is starved and fails. Any time a replacement turbo goes on, the oil-feed pipe, the sump strainer and the oil filter must go on with it β skipping that is why some owners end up buying two turbos. Fitted properly, the engine is a long-lived and economical unit.
Are Citroen C4 parts still available in South Africa?
Yes, largely thanks to the Peugeot connection β the C4 shares its engines, gearboxes and much of its running gear with the 307 and 308, which sold in bigger numbers here. Mechanical parts, engines, gearboxes and turbos are obtainable through specialist yards and importers. Model-specific body panels, lights and interior trim for the Coupe are the harder items and can take longer to find. Send your VIN and we will be straight with you about availability.
Is a used Citroen C4 worth buying in South Africa?
Only with your eyes open. These are now old cars from a brand that paused local sales, so buy the best-maintained example you can find rather than the cheapest. Listen for a chain rattle on cold start on the VTi, confirm a belt change on the HDi, check the footwells and scuttle for damp, and make sure the electrics all behave. Get it right and running costs are reasonable; get it wrong and you inherit somebody else's deferred maintenance.
Other Citroen hatchbacks We Cover
Looking at other Citroen hatchbacks? We stock spares for these models too.
C3
By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.
DS3
Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.
C2
A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.
C1
A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.
DS5
A low-slung premium fastback sold in small numbers before the DS split. Parts are genuinely scarce through official channels, so most owners end up sourcing used or aftermarket.
Xsara
The pre-Picasso Xsara hatch, now effectively off the used market. Anything for one is a sourcing job rather than a stock pick, but the supplier network still turns parts up.
