Buying a Used Citroen Cylinder Head in South Africa
Top-end work usually starts the same way: a head that has cracked or pulled out of true, often after a cooling problem nobody caught in time. The good news is that replacing the head is a long way short of replacing the engine. Two things decide whether the job sticks. The first is condition — a pressure-tested, skimmed casting is worth considerably more than a raw pull off a donor. The second is scope: what you are actually getting for the money. The petrol and diesel heads fail in different ways. On PureTech and EW10 petrols it is carbon-fouled valves, the THP versions worst of all, which is what sends owners looking for a reconditioned head with fresh valves in it. Diesel HDi heads far more often warp after an overheat, so buying one that has been pressure-tested is not optional. Where a deeper fault took the head out, a complete used engine can work out cheaper than the sum of the repairs, and on a turbo car it is worth casting an eye over the turbocharger while everything is apart.
