The cold-start tick that fades with warmth is the signature, and it is worth knowing because owners frequently mistake it for a noisy tappet or a worn lifter. The way to tell them apart costs nothing: listen at the manifold flange on a stone-cold start. A gasket leak is loud there and quiet at the cam cover. Alongside it look for soot around the flange and, on a turbo diesel, response that has gone lazy.

The gasket is cheap; the access is not. On the 1.6 HDi and 1.6 THP the manifold has to come off, which is typically three to four hours and carries a real risk of shearing a stud — budget for that possibility rather than being surprised by it. For a short while, yes, but there are three reasons not to leave it. Air leaking in upstream of the oxygen sensor makes the ECU read a lean mixture and add fuel it does not need, which costs consumption and can trigger limp mode. Exhaust in the engine bay can find its way into the cabin through the bulkhead. And on a turbo diesel, a leak between the head and the turbo means the turbo is not getting the energy it was designed around. Deal with it at the next service, sooner on an HDi.
