What Are Citroen C1 Resonator?
A resonator is a tuned chamber welded into the exhaust between the catalyst and the rear silencer, and it works differently from the silencer it sits ahead of. Where a silencer reduces overall loudness by forcing gas through baffles, a resonator cancels one specific frequency — the drone that would otherwise arrive in the cabin at a particular engine speed — by sending part of the wave back out of phase with itself. Which is why removing one does not make a car louder so much as it makes it tiring. They fail from the inside, corroded by condensate on short trips, and from the outside after a few winters of road spray.

What are the symptoms of a failing exhaust resonator on a Citroen?
You hear it before you see it — a raspier, louder note, a rattle over bumps and often a mid-range drone that makes long trips wearing. Underneath, look for perforation along the welded seams and pinholes where condensate has eaten through from inside. The drone is the diagnostic one, because that is precisely the frequency the resonator existed to cancel.
