What Are Thermostats?
The thermostat is a mechanical valve with a wax pellet inside it. Cold, the wax is solid and the valve stays shut, so coolant circulates only within the engine and the block warms quickly. As the wax melts it expands, pushes a pin and opens the valve to the radiator. There is no electronics and no control strategy β it is a temperature-operated tap. Counter-intuitively, the more common failure on Citroens is stuck open rather than stuck closed, which does not overheat the engine but leaves it running perpetually cold, and a cold engine is a thirsty, dirty and prematurely worn one.

Common Questions About Thermostats
What are the symptoms of a stuck Citroen thermostat?
The two failures look nothing alike. Stuck open: the engine runs cold, the heater is weak, the gauge never reaches the middle and fuel consumption climbs. Stuck closed: the gauge climbs fast, coolant bubbles in the header tank and steam appears under the bonnet. The first is a slow expense, the second will damage the engine within minutes.
How much does a Citroen thermostat cost in South Africa?
Our supplier network stocks thermostats from around R149 to R4,500 depending on the model, and the spread comes down to whether your engine takes a bare thermostat or a complete housing assembly with the sensor and pipe stubs moulded in. Ask through our form with the engine code so we quote the right one β the difference between the two is substantial.
How long does it take to replace a Citroen thermostat?
About an hour on most of the naturally aspirated engines. The turbocharged units such as the 1.6 THP take longer, simply because access to the housing is tighter with the turbo and its plumbing in the way. Have a coolant flush and refill done at the same time β the system is drained anyway, so the additional cost is small and the benefit real.
What happens if my Citroen thermostat is stuck open?
The engine takes far longer to reach operating temperature, the heater barely works and economy drops noticeably. Beyond the inconvenience there is genuine mechanical cost: an engine that never fully warms up does not evaporate the fuel and water that get past the rings, so the oil is progressively diluted and contaminated. It is not something to live with through a winter.
Why won't my Citroen reach operating temperature?
A thermostat stuck open is the leading cause by a wide margin. The other possibility is a faulty coolant temperature sensor reporting cold to the gauge while the engine is actually at temperature β which feels the same from the driver's seat but costs a fraction to fix. A scan tool reading live coolant temperature separates the two in seconds, so have that done first.
