What Are Coolant Reservoirs?
The expansion tank is the translucent plastic bottle that gives the coolant somewhere to go as it heats up and expands, and somewhere to come back from as it cools. On most Citroens it is also the pressurised high point of the system, which means the tank and its cap are holding the whole cooling system above atmospheric pressure β and that raised pressure is what lifts the boiling point of the coolant well above 100Β°C. A cracked tank therefore does not just lose fluid. It loses pressure, and a system at atmospheric pressure boils far sooner than one at 1.4 bar. Hairline cracks at the neck and around the moulding seams are common across the C2, C3, Xsara, C5 Aircross, C3 Aircross and C5 as the plastic ages in our sun.

Common Questions About Coolant Reservoirs
How much does a Citroen coolant reservoir cost?
This is one of the cheaper cooling repairs. A common aftermarket tank covering the C2, C3, Xsara, C5, C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross runs around R707, and it is roughly an hour of labour to fit and bleed. Replace the cap at the same time β it is a small part, it holds the system pressure, and a tired cap seal produces symptoms identical to a cracked tank. Send the VIN for the exact part number.
What are the symptoms of a cracked coolant reservoir?
A level that keeps dropping without an obvious leak is the giveaway, because a hairline crack only opens under pressure and seals itself again as the system cools β which is why the driveway stays dry. Look for a sweet smell after driving and white scale where coolant has evaporated along the seams. On the C2 and C3 the crack usually starts at the filler neck. Pressure-test the system cold and the leak becomes visible immediately.
Why does my Citroen keep losing coolant?
A cracked expansion tank is the most common answer across the C2, C3 and Xsara, and it is well documented on owner forums. Work through the cheap options before the expensive ones: the tank, the pressure cap, a weeping hose clamp, then the radiator. The one to rule out properly is a head gasket, and a combustion-gas test on the coolant answers that in a few minutes rather than by guesswork.
Can I drive my Citroen with a leaking coolant reservoir?
Briefly, with the level checked before every trip, and only to get it to a workshop. The reason to be careful is not the volume lost but the pressure lost β an unpressurised system boils at a much lower temperature, so the car can overheat on a run it would have handled easily. Overheating a 1.6 THP or an HDi warps the aluminium head, and that repair costs many times what the tank does.
Where can I buy a Citroen expansion tank in South Africa?
We source reservoirs nationally. Tanks for the C2, C3 and Xsara are usually common stock and can go out the same day; C3 Aircross and C5 units generally need ordering in. Ask for the cap with it β they are sold separately, they are inexpensive, and fitting a new tank under an old cap is a false economy we see repeated regularly. Send the VIN for a same-day quote.
