What Are Heater Cores?
The heater core is a small radiator buried in the dashboard, fed with hot engine coolant, with the blower pushing cabin air across it. It is a simple device in an appallingly inaccessible place, and that combination is the whole story. When one leaks, it leaks coolant into the footwell and mists the inside of the windscreen with a fine, sweet-smelling film that wipers cannot touch — a genuine visibility problem rather than just a mess. On the Xsara, the C3 Aircross and the related C4 Picasso platform we see two failure patterns: the matrix silting up internally with debris from degraded coolant, and the plastic end tanks weeping as they age.

Common Questions About Heater Cores
What are the symptoms of a bad heater core in a Citroen?
Sweet-smelling fog on the inside of the windscreen, a damp front carpet and a heater blowing cold are the three that together make it near-certain. On the Xsara and C3 Aircross the passenger footwell is usually soaked before the driver notices anything, so lifting the mat and pressing a hand into the carpet is worth doing the moment the windscreen starts misting oddly.
How much does it cost to replace a Citroen heater core?
R8,650 to R28,100 through a specialist, and that range says everything about where the money goes: the core itself is a modest part and labour is 60 to 80% of the bill, because the dashboard has to come out to reach it. Get a written quote against your VIN before starting. It is also worth asking what else will be replaced while the dash is out, since the heater valve and blend actuators are right there.
Can you drive a Citroen with a broken heater core?
Briefly and reluctantly. A leaking core loses coolant faster than most owners expect and fogs the windscreen with an oily film that genuinely impairs vision. Looping the two heater hoses together bypasses the core and will get the car home or through a week — you lose cabin heat and demist, which matters in winter. What you should not do is leave coolant sitting in the carpet, because the wiring and modules under it will suffer.
Why is my Citroen heater blowing cold air?
Four candidates, and only one of them is the core. A blocked matrix, a blend-door actuator stuck on cold, a coolant level too low to circulate through the core, or a thermostat stuck open so the engine never reaches temperature. On the Xsara and C3 Aircross the blend motor is a frequent culprit and a far smaller job than the core. Bleed the system and scan for actuator faults before anyone quotes to strip the dashboard.
How long does it take to replace a Citroen heater core?
Eight to twelve hours of workshop time on most Xsara, C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross models. The dashboard, the steering column and the complete HVAC box all come out, which means airbag components are disturbed and the aircon usually has to be discharged and regassed. It is a full-day job at minimum, and worth booking with a workshop that has done it on a Citroen before rather than one working it out as they go.
