What Are Temperature Sensors?
The coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor β a resistor whose value changes predictably with heat β screwed into the cooling system and reporting to the ECU. Its reading drives more than the gauge on your dash: it decides when the cooling fan runs, how much fuel the engine gets during warm-up, and when the ECU switches from its cold-start map to normal running. That breadth is why a failed sensor causes such varied and confusing symptoms, and why a sensor stuck reading cold is genuinely dangerous β the fan never receives its signal, and the engine overheats with the gauge showing normal.

Common Questions About Temperature Sensors
What are the symptoms of a bad Citroen coolant temperature sensor?
A gauge that jumps or sits low, an engine lamp, poor economy and a cooling fan that will not activate. The subtler symptom is a hard cold start with the engine running rich β the ECU believes it is still warming up and keeps enriching the mixture indefinitely, which fouls plugs and dilutes the oil over time as well as costing fuel.
How much does a Citroen coolant temperature sensor cost in South Africa?
The sensor covering the C1 through Dispatch fitment is around R65.93, and a workshop will charge roughly an hour of labour to fit and bleed the system afterwards. Ask through our form with your engine code β the 1.4, 1.6 THP and 1.6 HDi take different sensors, and they look similar enough to be ordered wrongly on a model name alone.
Can a faulty coolant temperature sensor cause my Citroen to overheat?
Yes, and this is the failure mode worth understanding. If the sensor reports cold when the engine is hot, the ECU never commands the cooling fan, so the car cooks in traffic while everything else appears normal. We see it across the C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross. Fit an original-specification part rather than the cheapest generic β the calibration curve is what you are buying.
Why is my Citroen temperature gauge jumping to red?
Either the engine really is overheating, or the sensor is lying. Check the coolant level first, once the engine is cold β a low level points at a leak or a failed thermostat and confirms the gauge is telling the truth. If the level is correct, there is no steam and no smell, and the gauge reads normal again after a restart, suspect the sensor rather than the engine.
Can a bad coolant temp sensor cause poor fuel economy?
Yes, and by a noticeable margin. An engine reported as cold gets an enriched mixture, and if the sensor never says otherwise, that enrichment never ends. Consumption typically climbs 10 to 20 percent, worst on short commuter runs where the enrichment would normally be a small proportion of the trip. Replacing the sensor restores economy immediately.
