Citroen C3 - Heat Shields

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Heat Shields for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Heat Shields

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Heat Shields for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Heat Shields

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Heat Shields for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Heat Shields

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Heat Shields for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Heat Shields

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Heat Shields for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Heat Shields for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Heat Shields for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Heat Shields?

Heat shields are thin stamped alloy plates that sit between something very hot and something that must not get hot. On a Citroen that means over the exhaust manifold, around the catalytic converter and above the fuel tank, protecting wiring looms, plastic fuel lines, the floor insulation and the cabin itself. They work by reflection and by trapping an air gap, so a shield that has bent and now touches the exhaust is barely doing its job at all. On the 1.6 HDi the upper manifold shield is the one that goes first: its thin mounting tabs fatigue from years of vibration and heat cycling, and the plate starts buzzing against the head.

Signs You Need New Heat Shields

A tinny rattle at idle that disappears as soon as you raise the revs
A tapping or buzzing from the engine bay on a cold start
Scorched underfloor insulation or melted wiring clips near the exhaust
A hot smell after a long climb or a spell of hard driving
A loose or hanging metal plate visible under the bonnet or the car
Sensors near the exhaust failing earlier than they should

Common Questions About Heat Shields

Why is my Citroen heat shield rattling?

The mounting tabs on the 1.6 HDi upper manifold shield fatigue and crack, and once one has gone the plate can vibrate freely against the cylinder head. It is a known design weakness rather than something you did. A stainless hose clamp around the shield is a legitimate roadside fix that will hold for months, but the proper repair is a replacement shield with sound tabs.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen heat shield?

A used shield through South African strippers is typically R300 to R900, and fitting is usually about an hour. Complete exhaust heat-shield kits for the larger vehicles cost more. Given the price, replacing the shield outright is nearly always better value than fabricating repairs to a cracked one, particularly since the tabs on the rest of it are the same age. Send the engine code for a quote.

Can you drive a Citroen with a broken heat shield?

For short distances, yes. As a long-term arrangement, no — the shield is the only thing keeping manifold heat off nearby sensors, wiring and fuel lines, and heat soak will age all three well ahead of schedule. There is also a road hazard argument: a cracked shield eventually drops pieces, and a loose or missing shield is a roadworthy failure in its own right.

What are the symptoms of a failing heat shield?

A metallic rattle at idle that vanishes above about 1,500 rpm is the signature, because at higher speeds the vibration frequency moves away from what makes the loose plate resonate. Owners often mistake it for something far more serious inside the engine, which is worth knowing before you panic. The supporting evidence is a hot smell after a climb, scorch marks on the floor insulation, or nearby sensors failing early.

Where can I buy a Citroen heat shield in South Africa?

Pro Citroen Spares keeps used manifold, catalyst and fuel tank shields for the C2, C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross HDi models, and our supplier network fills the gaps. These are model and engine specific rather than generic plates, so send the VIN and tell us which shield it is — the manifold and catalyst shields on the same car look similar in a photograph and are not interchangeable.
