Citroen C3 - Flex Pipe

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Flex Pipe for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Flex Pipe

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Flex Pipe for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Flex Pipe

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Flex Pipe for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Flex Pipe

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Flex Pipe for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Flex Pipe

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Flex Pipe for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Flex Pipe for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Flex Pipe for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Flex Pipe?

The flexible joint is the short braided section near the front of the exhaust, and it exists for one reason: the engine moves on its mounts and the exhaust behind it does not. Without something to absorb that movement, every gear change and every rocking motion at idle would put a bending load into rigid pipe, and rigid pipe answers that with a crack. Inside the stainless braid is a corrugated bellows doing the actual sealing; the braid outside is there to limit how far it can stretch. Both fail here for the same two reasons β€” corrosion from the inside where condensate sits, and over-flexing on a car whose engine mounts have gone soft. It is common across the C2, C3, Xsara, C3 Aircross and the TU and HDi-engined C5.

Signs You Need New Flex Pipe

A loud blow or tick from under the front of the car, worse on the overrun
Exhaust smell reaching the cabin at idle
Visible fraying or a tear in the braided outer sleeve
Vibration coming through the floor that was not there before
Turbo response gone soft on an HDi or THP, because gas is escaping ahead of the turbine
The front of the exhaust hanging low where the flex has torn through

Common Questions About Flex Pipe

What are the symptoms of a bad flex pipe?

A loud blow or tick that gets worse as you lift off the throttle, exhaust smell inside the car at idle, vibration into the floorpan, and visible fraying of the braid on a hoist. On the C2 and the Xsara HDi the flex is reliably the first exhaust section to fail, so on those cars it is worth checking first rather than last when chasing a new noise.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen flex pipe?

Generic flex sections run R190 to R850 through our network, and we carry Citroen-specific units alongside them. Fitting is one to two hours of cut-and-weld work at any competent exhaust shop. While the section is off, ask them to check the engine mounts β€” soft mounts are what tore the last one, and fitting a new flex to a car with collapsed mounts simply starts the clock again.

Can a Citroen flex pipe be welded or does it need replacing?

Welding a torn flex is a false economy. The braid and the bellows are thin, and a weld bead creates a hard spot immediately adjacent to a section designed to move β€” so the repair fails at the weld boundary, usually within weeks. The correct job is to cut the old section out entirely and weld a new flex in, which is quick, inexpensive and lasts. Any shop offering to patch it is saving you money this month and costing you money next month.

How much does a flex pipe cost in South Africa?

R190 at the budget end to around R850 for a premium stainless unit, with Citroen-specific parts available through our network. In practice most flex pipes get replaced as part of a front-pipe repair rather than on their own, because the section has to come off the car either way. Ask for a fitted quote rather than a parts price β€” the labour is the bigger half.

Why is my Citroen exhaust vibrating?

A failed or seized flex is the leading cause, because with nothing absorbing engine movement the vibration goes straight into the system and then into the body. The two other candidates are collapsed engine or gearbox mounts, which let the engine move far more than the flex was designed to accommodate, and a loose heat shield, which buzzes rather than shakes. All three are a two-minute inspection on a ramp, so get it looked at rather than guessed.
