Citroen C3 - Fan Clutches

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Fan Clutches for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Fan Clutches for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Fan Clutches for C3 Aircross crossover

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Fan Clutches for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Fan Clutches for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

What Are Fan Clutches?

A viscous fan clutch is a temperature-sensitive coupling between the engine and a belt-driven cooling fan. When the air coming off the radiator is hot, a bimetallic strip opens a valve, silicone fluid fills the working chamber, and the fan is driven. When things are cool the fluid drains back and the fan freewheels, which saves fuel and a great deal of noise. This is old technology and it is worth being clear about where it applies: on Citroen it is the commercial and older vehicles β€” the Relay and Dispatch vans and certain HDi variants. Nearly every modern Citroen passenger car uses an electric fan switched by the ECU instead, which is a completely different part with a completely different fault list.

Signs You Need New Fan Clutches

Temperature climbing at idle even with the coolant level correct
A constant roar like a jet engine, at every speed and every temperature
The fan spinning freely by hand on a cold engine, which means it has seized open
Silicone fluid weeping around the clutch hub
Aircon that stops cooling properly once the car is stationary
The fan still fully engaged long after the engine has reached temperature

Common Questions About Fan Clutches

What are the symptoms of a bad fan clutch?

They fail in two opposite directions. Seized open means the fan never drives, so the car overheats at idle and in traffic while behaving normally on the open road. Seized closed means the fan drives permanently, so you get a constant roar, worse fuel consumption and a slightly slower car. On the Relay and Dispatch diesel vans we see this around 150,000 km. The cold spin test tells you which: a healthy clutch offers noticeable resistance cold, a seized-open one spins like a bicycle wheel.

How much does a Citroen fan clutch cost in South Africa?

Roughly R340 to R1,300 depending on the vehicle and the brand, through our network. Before spending anything, confirm your vehicle actually has one β€” most modern Citroen passenger cars do not, and an owner chasing a fan clutch on an electric-fan car is looking for a part that was never fitted. Send the VIN and we will tell you in a minute which cooling system you are dealing with.

Why does my Citroen overheat at idle?

The answer splits by cooling system. On the older Relay, Dispatch and some HDi vans with a viscous clutch, a clutch seized open means the fan barely turns at idle and the temperature climbs the moment you stop moving. On the electric-fan cars, the same symptom points at the fan relay, the resistor pack, the temperature sensor or the fan motor β€” cheap parts, different diagnosis entirely. Identifying which system you have is step one, not step two.

Why does my Citroen fan sound like a jet engine?

The clutch has seized closed, so the fan is locked to the engine and spinning at full speed whenever the engine is running rather than only when cooling is needed. It is loud at every speed, and because you are driving a large fan continuously it costs a little fuel and a little power too. Mechanically it is safe β€” the engine is being over-cooled rather than under-cooled β€” so this one can wait for a workshop booking rather than a tow.

Can you drive a Citroen with a failing fan clutch?

It depends which way it has failed, and the difference is important. Seized closed is noisy and thirsty but perfectly safe. Seized open means no cooling at a standstill, and you will overheat in Johannesburg traffic within a few kilometres. If you have to move a car with a seized-open clutch, do it at open-road speed where airflow through the radiator does the fan's job, avoid stopping, and go straight to a workshop.
