What Are Sway Bar?
The anti-roll bar is a torsion spring in disguise. It runs across the car, connecting the left and right suspension via the drop links, and it does nothing at all when both wheels move together β over a level bump it simply rotates in its mounts. It only resists when one side rises relative to the other, which is exactly what happens as the body leans in a corner. That is a neat piece of engineering, and it explains where the wear actually is: not in the bar, which almost never fails outside crash damage, but in the rubber bushes clamping it to the body and in the drop links at each end.

Common Questions About Sway Bar
What are the symptoms of bad Citroen sway bar bushes?
A clunk over bumps that is louder on one side, a squeak at parking-lot speeds and steering that has gone loose in fast bends. The visual check is easy β pull back the plastic arch liner and look at where the bar passes through its centre mounts. Split rubber, or rubber that has migrated out of the clamp, is usually plain to see with a torch.
How much does it cost to replace a Citroen anti-roll bar bush?
The bushes are inexpensive, usually under R200 a pair. Labour is the variable and can be surprising, because on many models the centre mounts sit behind a subframe brace that has to come off first. Ask through our form with your model for a realistic figure β the parts price on this job tells you almost nothing about the total.
What is the difference between a sway bar and an anti-roll bar?
Nothing at all β they are the same component under two names. "Anti-roll bar" is the British term and what you will find in a Citroen workshop manual; "sway bar" is the American one and common in aftermarket catalogues. South African suppliers use both interchangeably, and either term will bring up the right part when you ask us for a quote.
Why does my Citroen clunk when going over bumps?
Three candidates cover almost all of them: worn anti-roll bar bushes, tired drop links and collapsed strut top mounts. They sound alike from the driver's seat and they cost very different amounts to fix, which is the case for having it looked at rather than guessed. On a lift, with the weight still on the wheels, a technician identifies the source in about fifteen minutes.
Can I drive with a broken sway bar?
A genuinely snapped bar is rare and worth taking seriously β body roll increases sharply and the car's balance in a corner changes in a way you will not expect until you need it. Broken bushes are far more common and much less dramatic, and a car will drive safely on them for a short period. Either way, book it in within the week: caught early this is a small job.
