Citroen C3 - Struts

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Struts for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Struts

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Struts for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Struts

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Struts for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Struts

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Struts for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Struts

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Struts for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2

Struts for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Struts for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Struts for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

Citroen C4 Picasso - Struts

Citroen C4 Picasso

Struts for C4 Picasso mpv

A five-seat MPV with a panoramic windscreen and a lot of glass, which is where most enquiries start. The 2.0 HDi cars also bring steady demand for DPF, EGR and injection parts.

Struts for C5 sedan

The large executive C5 was never a volume seller here, but the ones still on the road need parts that nobody stocks locally. Hydraulic suspension components and diesel ancillaries are the usual requests.

What Are Struts?

A strut is a damper that also does structural work. Unlike a separate shock absorber, a MacPherson strut locates the top of the wheel hub and carries the coil spring around it, so it is part of the steering geometry as well as the suspension. Three consequences follow. Replacing one changes the camber setting, so an alignment afterwards is mandatory rather than optional. The top mount contains a bearing that lets the whole assembly rotate as you steer, and that bearing is a wear item in its own right. And a pothole strike loads the strut in bending, not just compression β€” which is why our roads finish struts at 80,000 to 120,000 km on the C3, Xsara and C5 Aircross.

Signs You Need New Struts

The car bouncing more than once after a speed hump
The nose diving hard under braking
A clunk over rough surfaces, often the top mount rather than the damper
Oil misting or a wet band down the strut body
Cupped or feathered tyre wear
Noticeably more body lean through corners than the car used to have

Common Questions About Struts

What are the symptoms of a worn Citroen strut?

Excessive bounce, nose-dive under braking, clunks over rough roads and visible oil weeping down the body. The bounce test is the useful one and needs no tools: push down hard on each corner and release. A healthy strut brings the car back up and settles in one movement. A worn one carries on bobbing two or three times, and that is a damper no longer controlling its spring.

How much does it cost to replace Citroen struts in South Africa?

Struts start from around R315 and range from R149 to R4,500 depending on the model and specification through our supplier network. Labour is the bigger variable at roughly two hours for a front pair, plus the alignment afterwards. Ask for a quote covering parts, fitting and alignment together β€” a parts price alone understates this job substantially.

Should Citroen struts be replaced in pairs?

Yes, both fronts or both rears together, every time. A new strut on one side and a worn one on the other means the two sides of the car respond differently to the same input, which shows up as a pull under braking and as instability in a quick lane change. Budget for pairs from the outset; a single strut is rarely money well spent.

Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing Citroen struts?

Yes, without exception. Unbolting the strut from the hub carrier disturbs the camber setting, and a new spring restores ride height, which changes the toe. Skip the alignment and a set of new tyres can be ruined inside 10,000 km β€” which costs considerably more than the alignment would have. Have a four-wheel alignment done immediately after fitting, not next month.

How long do Citroen struts last?

80,000 to 120,000 km on South African roads before wear becomes obvious. Potholes, coastal salt on the strut bodies and regularly carrying loads all shorten it, and a single hard pothole strike can bend a strut rod outright. We inspect at every major service for weeping, play in the top mount and the bounce test, rather than replacing purely on mileage β€” plenty of struts are fine past that range and some are finished well before it.
