Citroen C3 - Bushings

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Bushings for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Bushings

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Bushings for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Bushings

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Bushings for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Bushings

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Bushings for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Bushings

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Bushings for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2 - Bushings

Citroen C2

Bushings for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Citroen Berlingo - Bushings

Citroen Berlingo

Bushings for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Citroen C1 - Bushings

Citroen C1

Bushings for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

Citroen C4 Picasso - Bushings

Citroen C4 Picasso

Bushings for C4 Picasso mpv

A five-seat MPV with a panoramic windscreen and a lot of glass, which is where most enquiries start. The 2.0 HDi cars also bring steady demand for DPF, EGR and injection parts.

What Are Bushings?

A bushing is a piece of rubber doing a job that looks simple and is not: holding a suspension arm firmly enough that the wheel stays where the geometry says it should, while flexing enough to absorb the shock of every ridge and pothole before it reaches the cabin. The same principle covers control-arm bushes, anti-roll bar mounts, subframe mounts and engine mounts. Rubber degrades from heat, from oil contamination and from repeated impact rather than from mileage, which is why bushing life here has far more to do with which roads you use than with what the odometer says. When they go, nothing breaks. The car just develops a knock, the steering goes vague, and an alignment that was set last month has quietly drifted.

Signs You Need New Bushings

A clunk over bumps and speed humps, front or rear
Steering that wanders and follows ruts and tramlines instead of holding a line
Front tyres wearing unevenly despite a recent alignment
A clonk as you take up drive from rest, which points at engine or gearbox mounts
Cracked, split or visibly perished rubber when the arm is inspected on a hoist
The car sitting lower or leaning slightly on one side

Common Questions About Bushings

What are the symptoms of worn Citroen bushings?

Knocks over bumps, steering that wanders, tyre wear that returns after every alignment, and a clonk when you engage gear. Owner forums document the same failure across the C2, C3, Xsara, C5 Aircross and C3 Aircross, and it is nearly always the same part: the rear bush in the front lower control arm, which takes the fore-and-aft braking load and is the first to collapse. It is worth checking that one specifically before anything else.

How much does it cost to replace bushings on a Citroen?

Parts run from around R150 for standard rubber up to about R2,600 for a full polyurethane kit at local pricing. Labour varies enormously by position β€” an anti-roll bar bush is minutes, a subframe bush is about an hour each, and engine mounts run two to three hours because the engine has to be supported while they come out. Send the VIN and tell us which knock you are chasing, and we will price the parts for that job rather than the whole car.

How long do Citroen suspension bushings last?

Front control-arm rubber typically manages 80,000 to 140,000 km here. Rear trailing-arm bushes generally outlast them because they see less braking load. Neither figure survives contact with a serious pothole β€” a single hard strike can split a bush outright, so if you have hit something properly it is worth having the front end looked at regardless of what the odometer says. A hoist inspection takes ten minutes.

Why does my Citroen make a clunking noise over bumps?

Control-arm and anti-roll bar bushes are the leading suspects on the C2, C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross, but they are not the only things that clunk. Broken anti-roll bar drop links produce a near-identical noise and cost a fraction to fix, and a worn strut top mount is a third candidate. Because all three are visible on a hoist with a pry bar, the diagnosis is quick and cheap β€” get it identified before ordering parts.

Should I replace bushings with rubber or polyurethane?

For a car used daily on South African roads, standard rubber at around R150 a bush is the right answer, and that is not a cost compromise β€” rubber is what the suspension geometry was designed around, and it isolates road noise the way the car was meant to. Polyurethane is stiffer and lasts longer, which suits a car that is driven hard, but it transmits considerably more noise and vibration into the cabin. On a Citroen, whose whole appeal is ride quality, that is a real trade-off rather than a small one.
