Citroen C3 - Tie Rods

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Tie Rods for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Tie Rods

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Tie Rods for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Tie Rods

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Tie Rods for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Tie Rods

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Tie Rods for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Tie Rods

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Tie Rods for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Tie Rods for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Tie Rods for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Tie Rods?

The tie rods are the last link in the steering chain: the rack pushes them sideways and they push the wheel hubs, turning the wheels. Each side has two parts. The inner tie rod threads into the end of the rack and lives under the rubber gaiter; the outer tie rod end screws onto the inner and carries a ball joint into the steering knuckle. The threaded joint between them is also the toe adjustment, which is why every tie rod job ends at the alignment rack. Outers wear first, because their ball joint is exposed to everything the road offers once the rubber boot splits.

Signs You Need New Tie Rods

A clunk from the front as you turn the steering
Feathered or scuffed wear across the front tyre tread
Steering that wanders at open-road speed and needs constant correction
A squeak at parking speeds going lock to lock
A vibration felt through the steering wheel
A split rubber boot on the tie rod end with grease around it

Common Questions About Tie Rods

What are the symptoms of a bad Citroen tie rod end?

A clunk on turns, feathered front tyre wear, loose steering and a squeak at parking speeds. The check takes a minute: with the wheel off the ground, grip the tyre at nine and three o'clock and rock it firmly. Play with a knock means an outer tie rod, an inner tie rod, or a lower ball joint — and having someone watch the joints while you rock it tells you which.

How much does a Citroen tie rod end cost in South Africa?

Our supplier network stocks tie rod ends for the C2, Xsara and C4 from around R240. Always price them as a pair — the two sides have done identical work and replacing one only means doing the other in a few months, paying for a second alignment along the way. Ask through our form for both sides including fitting and the four-wheel alignment.

Is it safe to drive with a worn tie rod on a Citroen?

At low speed for a short period, yes. As a way of life, no. A tie rod end that separates at the ball joint means that wheel is no longer being steered, and at open-road speed the outcome is not something you can drive out of. Once you have a definite clunk, treat it as a week rather than a month, and it is a roadworthy failure in the meantime.

Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing a tie rod?

Yes, always, and this is not a workshop upsell. The tie rod length is what sets the toe angle of that wheel, so disturbing it changes the alignment by definition. Skip it and you will scrub a new set of front tyres out in a few thousand kilometres and have a car that pulls to one side the whole time. Budget the alignment into the job from the start.

What is the difference between inner and outer tie rods on a Citroen?

The inner threads directly into the end of the steering rack and lives inside the rubber gaiter, protected from the elements. The outer screws onto the inner and carries the ball joint that connects to the wheel knuckle, exposed to the road. That difference in exposure decides their failure modes: outers wear from grit reaching a split boot, while inners generally only fail after a torn rack gaiter has let dirt in.
