What Are Headliner?
The headliner is not really a fabric β it is a sandwich. A moulded board forms the roof shape, a thin layer of polyurethane foam is bonded to it, and the visible cloth is bonded to the foam. Nothing holds the cloth to the board directly. So when a headliner sags, the cloth has not come unglued; the foam between the two layers has crumbled to dust and there is nothing left for the glue to hold onto. That is why pins and tacks never work for long. Heat is what breaks the foam down, and a car parked outdoors through South African summers gets there faster than the ten to fifteen years the material is nominally good for. The sag typically starts around the rear-view mirror mount and any sunroof aperture, where the board is already cut.

Common Questions About Headliner
How much does it cost to replace a Citroen headliner?
A full retrim through an auto-upholsterer runs R2,600 to R6,200 depending on the size of the panel and the fabric you choose β a small hatchback roof without a sunroof sits at the bottom of that, a large panel with apertures at the top. A used headliner through Pro Citroen Spares costs less, but be realistic about it: matching colour and finding one that has not already started to go is the difficulty.
How do you fix a sagging headliner in a Citroen?
Properly, by dropping the whole board out of the car, stripping the old cloth and scraping away every trace of the perished foam, then bonding fresh foam-backed material with a high-temperature trim adhesive. It has to be high-temperature β ordinary contact adhesive lets go the first time the car sits in the sun. Pins and stick-on tacks are a visible, temporary trick that rarely survives one summer and make the eventual retrim harder.
What causes a Citroen headliner to sag?
The polyurethane foam between the cloth and the board breaks down chemically with heat and time, typically after ten to fifteen years, and once it has turned to powder there is nothing bonding the fabric to anything. Our conditions accelerate every part of that β cabin temperatures in a car parked outdoors, dark paint absorbing more heat, and the sheer number of sunny days. A car that lives in a garage can go considerably longer.
Can you repair a Citroen headliner without replacing it?
Small sags right at an edge sometimes respond to careful re-gluing with a high-temperature spray adhesive such as 3M Super 77, because at an edge there is still sound material either side to bond to. A large sag in the middle of the panel will not β the foam layer across that whole area has gone, so glue has nothing to grip and the weight of the fabric pulls it straight back down. That is a retrim.
Where can I buy a Citroen headliner in South Africa?
Pro Citroen Spares sources used headliner boards for the Xsara, C5, C4 Picasso and C3 Aircross. Being straight about it: most owners end up at a local trim shop for a retrim instead, because a used board of the same age carries the same tired foam and you would be doing the job twice. Send the VIN and we will quote the used panel and point you to the retrim option alongside it.
