Citroen C3 - Glove Compartment

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Glove Compartment for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Glove Compartment for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Glove Compartment for C3 Aircross crossover

Citroen DS3 - Glove Compartment

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Glove Compartment for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Glove Compartment for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

What Are Glove Compartment?

The glovebox is a moulded plastic bin in the dashboard with a lid, a latch, a hinge and usually a damper to stop the lid dropping open. Almost everything about it is durable except one piece β€” the latch tongue, a thin plastic hook that engages a metal striker in the dash. On the C3 and Xsara that tongue is the known failure point, and it does not wear gradually. It fatigues and snaps cleanly, at which point the lid either hangs open or, more annoyingly, jams shut with the broken hook still caught behind the striker.

Signs You Need New Glove Compartment

A lid that will not latch, or drops open over every bump
A handle that feels slack, or comes away in your hand
A lid jammed shut with the latch stuck behind the striker
Broken plastic fragments rattling somewhere behind the dashboard
The damper arm detached, so the lid falls open and slams
The light inside the box staying on and flattening the battery

Common Questions About Glove Compartment

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen glove box?

A used assembly through South African strippers generally lands between R250 and R850 for the C3 and Xsara. A latch-only repair is cheaper again, and on most of these cars it is the correct fix because the bin itself is undamaged. Send the VIN with a note of your interior trim colour β€” a mismatched grey is more obvious in a dashboard than people expect.

Why is my Citroen glove compartment jammed or broken?

The latch tongue is a thin plastic hook that flexes every time the box is opened, and after enough cycles it fatigues and snaps. If it breaks while engaged, the remaining stub stays caught behind the striker and the lid is locked shut. The mistake to avoid at that point is forcing it β€” pulling hard usually cracks the hinge tabs and the surrounding dash trim too, and turns a cheap latch job into a whole assembly.

How do you open a Citroen glove box with a broken handle?

Slide a thin plastic trim tool down the gap at the side of the lid until it meets the latch tongue, then push the tongue sideways off the striker while pulling gently on the lid. It usually releases with very little force once you have found it. What you should not do is lever from underneath β€” the hinge tabs at the bottom are the weakest part of the moulding and they break easily.

Can you replace just the glove box latch on a Citroen?

On most C3 and Xsara units, yes β€” the latch is a separate module that unclips from the inside of the lid, and a latch kit costs a fraction of a complete glovebox. Worth weighing against it: a colour-matched second-hand lid from a stripper often costs little more and gives you fresh plastic throughout, including the hinge tabs, which are the same age as the latch that just failed.

Where can I buy a Citroen glove compartment in South Africa?

Pro Citroen Spares carries used gloveboxes and latch assemblies for the C2, C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross, with more stock through our supplier network. Send the VIN so we can match trim colour and specification β€” boxes differ between cars with and without a cooled vent feed, and between trim levels, and they are similar enough to be confused in a listing photograph.
