Citroen C3 - Filters

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Filters for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Filters

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Filters for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Filters

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Filters for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Filters

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Filters for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Filters

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Filters for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2

Filters for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Filters for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Filters for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

What Are Filters?

Four filters do the unglamorous work on your Citroen. The oil filter traps the metal and carbon that circulate through the engine, catching particles down to about 25 microns. The air filter keeps dust out of the intake. The fuel filter protects the injection system, which on an HDi means protecting components that cost more than the rest of the service put together. The cabin filter protects you.

South African conditions attack all four faster than the service book assumes. Gravel and dry-season dust load air filters in a fraction of their rated life. Fuel quality varies enough forecourt to forecourt that diesel filters earn their keep, and water in diesel is the single most expensive thing a fuel filter prevents. Highveld heat shortens oil life, which shortens filter life with it. And cabin filters clog with a mix of dust, pollen and traffic soot, which is why a car that suddenly fogs up in winter usually needs a filter rather than an aircon regas.

Signs You Need New Filters

Flat throttle response and fuel consumption creeping up, the classic choked air filter
Oil pressure warning or a top-end rattle on start-up, which is a blocked oil filter until proven otherwise
A diesel that hesitates, hunts at idle or is hard to start hot — fuel filter first, injectors second
Weak airflow from the vents, or the windscreen fogging and refusing to clear
Black smoke on acceleration, or plugs coming out sooty on a petrol car

Common Questions About Filters

What are the filters in a car and what do they do?

Oil, air, fuel and cabin. The oil filter keeps abrasive debris out of the bearings and the turbo. The air filter keeps dust out of the cylinders, which matters more on gravel than anywhere else. The fuel filter stands between the tank and the injection system, and on an HDi it also separates water out of the diesel. The cabin filter is the only one that exists for the passengers rather than the machinery. They run to different intervals, and treating them as one service item is how people end up replacing an air filter three times while a fuel filter quietly blocks.

How much do car filters cost in South Africa?

Air filters R250 to R600, oil filters R150 to R450, cabin filters R300 to R800, and fuel filters R400 to R1,200 with the diesel units at the upper end. Fitting adds R500 to R1,500 depending on which filter and how buried it is. Air and cabin filters are genuinely DIY items on most Citroens, so the labour on those is optional. The fuel filter on an HDi is the one to leave alone unless you know the bleed procedure.

How do you know if your car filter is bad?

Each one fails with its own signature. A choked air filter dulls acceleration and lifts consumption. A blocked oil filter shows up as an oil pressure warning or a rattle before the pressure builds. A dirty fuel filter causes hesitation, rough idle and hard starting, and on a diesel it usually gets worse under load. A saturated cabin filter shows up as weak airflow, a musty smell and a windscreen that will not demist. If you are on dusty roads, assume all of them are ahead of schedule rather than behind it.

How often should I replace filters on my Citroen in South Africa?

The book intervals are air filter every 20,000-30,000 km, oil filter with every oil change at 10,000-15,000 km, fuel filter every 40,000-60,000 km on diesel or around 80,000 km on petrol, and cabin filter every 15,000-20,000 km. Those numbers assume European air. On Highveld dust, gravel roads or coastal salt, cutting them by 30-40% is not over-servicing — it is matching the interval to the conditions the car is actually in.

Can I replace Citroen filters myself or do I need a dealer?

Air and cabin filters take fifteen or twenty minutes and basic tools, and doing them yourself saves R300-R600 in labour each time. Oil filters go with the oil change, and most owners have that done professionally simply because used oil has to go somewhere legal. Fuel filters on the HDi diesels are the exception worth paying for — the system runs at high pressure, air in the rail causes its own problems, and the bleed procedure is specific. There is no dealer requirement on any of it; a competent independent workshop is fine.
