Oil, air, fuel and cabin. The oil filter keeps abrasive debris out of the bearings and the turbo. The air filter keeps dust out of the cylinders, which matters more on gravel than anywhere else. The fuel filter stands between the tank and the injection system, and on an HDi it also separates water out of the diesel. The cabin filter is the only one that exists for the passengers rather than the machinery. They run to different intervals, and treating them as one service item is how people end up replacing an air filter three times while a fuel filter quietly blocks.

Air filters R250 to R600, oil filters R150 to R450, cabin filters R300 to R800, and fuel filters R400 to R1,200 with the diesel units at the upper end. Fitting adds R500 to R1,500 depending on which filter and how buried it is. Air and cabin filters are genuinely DIY items on most Citroens, so the labour on those is optional. The fuel filter on an HDi is the one to leave alone unless you know the bleed procedure.

Each one fails with its own signature. A choked air filter dulls acceleration and lifts consumption. A blocked oil filter shows up as an oil pressure warning or a rattle before the pressure builds. A dirty fuel filter causes hesitation, rough idle and hard starting, and on a diesel it usually gets worse under load. A saturated cabin filter shows up as weak airflow, a musty smell and a windscreen that will not demist. If you are on dusty roads, assume all of them are ahead of schedule rather than behind it.

The book intervals are air filter every 20,000-30,000 km, oil filter with every oil change at 10,000-15,000 km, fuel filter every 40,000-60,000 km on diesel or around 80,000 km on petrol, and cabin filter every 15,000-20,000 km. Those numbers assume European air. On Highveld dust, gravel roads or coastal salt, cutting them by 30-40% is not over-servicing — it is matching the interval to the conditions the car is actually in.

Air and cabin filters take fifteen or twenty minutes and basic tools, and doing them yourself saves R300-R600 in labour each time. Oil filters go with the oil change, and most owners have that done professionally simply because used oil has to go somewhere legal. Fuel filters on the HDi diesels are the exception worth paying for — the system runs at high pressure, air in the rail causes its own problems, and the bleed procedure is specific. There is no dealer requirement on any of it; a competent independent workshop is fine.
