Citroen C3 - Engine Blocks

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Engine Blocks for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Engine Blocks

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Engine Blocks for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Engine Blocks

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Engine Blocks for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Engine Blocks

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Engine Blocks for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Engine Blocks

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Engine Blocks for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Citroen C2

Engine Blocks for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Engine Blocks for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Citroen C1 - Engine Blocks

Citroen C1

Engine Blocks for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

Engine Blocks for C4 Picasso mpv

A five-seat MPV with a panoramic windscreen and a lot of glass, which is where most enquiries start. The 2.0 HDi cars also bring steady demand for DPF, EGR and injection parts.

What Are Engine Blocks?

The block is the casting everything else bolts to β€” cylinders, crankshaft main bearings, oil galleries and water jacket all in one piece of aluminium. It is the part of the engine least likely to fail and the most expensive to replace, and those two facts are connected: nobody replaces a block for wear, only for damage. What damages one is heat or a failure elsewhere. On the 1.2 PureTech, 1.6 THP and 2.0 HDi the aluminium casting is strong and light, and it tolerates a serious overheat far less well than an old iron block would. The useful thing about the South African market is that used engines move in real volume through the strip yards, so a whole engine is frequently a better buy than a bare block.

Signs You Need New Engine Blocks

Coolant vanishing with no external leak anywhere on the engine
White exhaust smoke and milky oil appearing together
A knock from low in the engine that arrived with a bearing failure
One cylinder down on compression and staying down after a wet test
Coolant visible on the dipstick or oil visible in the expansion tank
A hole in the block wall β€” the end of that engine

Common Questions About Engine Blocks

How much does a Citroen engine block cost in South Africa?

In practice you will be pricing complete used engines rather than bare blocks, because that is what the market moves and because a bare block still needs everything else transferred onto it. Used Citroen engines run from roughly R1,400 to R5,500 and up depending on the model, the engine code and the mileage. Send the VIN and the engine code and we will tell you what is actually available this week rather than what is theoretically obtainable.

What are the symptoms of a cracked engine block?

Coolant disappearing with nothing on the driveway, white smoke, milky oil and overheating β€” the same four symptoms a failed head gasket produces, which is exactly why the diagnosis matters so much. On the 1.6 HDi and 1.2 PureTech a cracked block nearly always follows a documented severe overheat. Pressure-testing the cooling system and running a combustion-gas test on the coolant separates a gasket from a head from a block before anyone commits to an engine.

Is it cheaper to rebuild or replace a Citroen engine?

For the common units β€” 1.4 HDi, 1.6 PureTech, 1.6 THP β€” a used South African engine at R1,400 to R5,500 usually beats a full rebuild, because a proper rebuild means machining, parts and many hours before you get to the same place. The calculation shifts for the less common engines, where used stock is thin and a rebuild of the engine you already have becomes competitive. We scan and inspect first, then price both routes rather than assuming.

Can a cracked Citroen engine block be repaired?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on where the crack is. A small crack in the water jacket can be stitched by an engineering specialist and will hold, and there are shops in our network that do this work properly. A crack that runs into a cylinder bore or through a main bearing saddle is terminal β€” those areas carry structural load and no repair survives it. Any block we quote on gets pressure-tested first so the decision rests on evidence.

Where can I buy a used Citroen engine in South Africa?

We source used engines nationally, and the pool is deeper than the local Citroen population suggests because these engines were fitted to Peugeots too. Common stock covers the 1.4 HDi, 1.6 PureTech, 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi. Send the VIN and we will match on engine code, model year and mileage β€” the engine code is what matters, since the same badge on the boot covered several different engines across the years.
