What Are Timing Chains?
A timing chain does the same job as a timing belt β keeping the crankshaft and camshafts in step β but it is presented as a lifetime component rather than a scheduled one. On Citroen that means the 1.6 VTi and THP petrols, the engines developed jointly with BMW. In practice "lifetime" turns out to depend heavily on oil, because the chain tensioner is hydraulic and runs on engine oil pressure. Neglect the oil and the tensioner cannot take up slack, the chain runs loose, and the guides wear. The warning is unmistakable and it is worth knowing: a rattle from the front of the engine lasting one to three seconds on a cold start.

Common Questions About Timing Chains
Why does my Citroen rattle on cold start?
On the 1.6 VTi and THP engines, a rattle from the front of the engine lasting one to three seconds after a cold start is the textbook sign of chain stretch and a tensioner that can no longer take up the slack. Do not wait to see whether it gets worse β it will. Every week it runs raises the chance of the chain jumping a tooth and the valves meeting the pistons.
How much does a Citroen timing chain replacement cost?
It is a major job: the chain, the guides, the tensioner and usually the sprockets all get replaced together, and the front of the engine has to come apart to reach them. South African workshops price it by model and engine. Ask through our form with your engine code for a local figure β and get it before the rattle becomes a rebuild, because the difference is substantial.
Which Citroen engines have timing chain problems?
The 1.6 VTi and the turbocharged 1.6 THP β the EP6 family Citroen developed with BMW β are the ones with a reputation for early chain stretch, and they appear across the C3, C4 and C5 ranges. The belt-driven engines are a separate matter entirely: the TU petrols and the HDi diesels use a timing belt on a fixed interval, and the turbocharged PureTech uses a belt that runs in oil.
Can a stretched Citroen timing chain cause engine damage?
Yes, and it is the reason we are firm about the cold-start rattle. A badly stretched chain eventually jumps a tooth on a sprocket, at which point the camshafts and the crankshaft are no longer synchronised and the pistons meet open valves. That is bent valves at best and a rebuild at worst. At the first persistent rattle, stop driving the car and book it in.
How often should a Citroen timing chain be replaced?
The manufacturer position is that it lasts the life of the engine. Real-world 1.6 VTi and THP engines show stretch from as early as 50,000 to 80,000 km where servicing has been neglected. Our advice is to have it inspected around 80,000 km regardless, and to act immediately on any cold-start rattle whatever the odometer says β mileage is a poor predictor here, oil history is a good one.
What oil should I use to prevent timing chain stretch?
A full synthetic 5W-30 meeting the manufacturer specification for your engine, changed every 10,000 km without exception. This matters more than any other service item on these engines, because the chain tensioner is hydraulic and depends entirely on clean oil at pressure to hold the chain taut. The wrong grade, or a stretched interval, is the single biggest cause of early chain failure we see.
