What Are Citroen C4 Cactus Crankshafts?
Two quite different parts get called "the crankshaft" in a workshop conversation, and they sit at opposite ends of the cost scale. One is the crankshaft itself — the forged steel shaft running the length of the block that every connecting rod drives, present in every Citroen engine from the 1.2 PureTech to the 2.0 HDi. It is among the most durable components in the car and effectively never fails on its own. The other is the crankshaft position sensor, a small magnetic pickup at the crank snout or the bellhousing that tells the ECU where the engine is in its cycle. Without its signal the ECU will not fire the injectors, and the car cranks endlessly without starting. Establishing which one someone means is the first thing worth doing.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen crankshaft?
The two answers are worlds apart, which is why we always ask which you mean. Replacing the crankshaft is an engine-out rebuild with machining involved and is priced accordingly — on an older car a good used engine usually wins that comparison. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is roughly R65 to R550 through our network plus under an hour of labour. If a workshop has quoted a large number, confirm which part was actually diagnosed.
What are the symptoms of a bad crankshaft sensor?
The signature fault is heat-related: the car starts fine cold, runs, then cuts out after a period of driving and refuses to restart until it has cooled for twenty minutes or so. Alongside that you get intermittent misfires and P0335 or P0336 codes. On the C2 and C3 1.4 HDi, corrosion in the sensor connector produces the same symptoms as a failed sensor, so unplug and inspect the pins before buying anything — it is occasionally just a clean and a re-seat.
Can I drive my Citroen with a faulty crankshaft sensor?
Not with any confidence. The ECU cannot fire injectors or ignition without crank position, so when that signal drops the engine stops immediately — no warning, no limp mode, and no power steering assistance once it has. A sensor that only misbehaves when hot will pick the worst possible moment eventually. It is a cheap part and a short job, and there is no argument for nursing it.
How much does a Citroen crankshaft sensor cost in South Africa?
Roughly R65 to R550 depending on the model and the brand, which is a wide band for a small part — the difference is largely between a generic unit and a Bosch or Valeo one built to the original specification. What causes a Citroen crankshaft to fail?
Very little, directly. The shaft is extremely strong, and when one is damaged it is almost always the consequence of something else — oil starvation that destroyed a big-end bearing, a serious overheat, or a rod failure that has already taken the engine with it. By the time the crank is the problem the decision has usually become engine replacement rather than crank replacement. The sensor is the opposite case: it simply ages, and heat and connector corrosion finish it.
