What Are Brake Lines?
The plumbing between the master cylinder and the calipers comes in two forms. Rigid steel pipe runs the length of the chassis, where nothing moves and where the pipe is exposed to everything the road throws at it. Flexible rubber hoses take over at each wheel, because the suspension and the steering move and steel will not. Each fails in its own way. Steel pipe corrodes from the outside, and on Citroens the stretch that runs near the rear axle is the one that goes first — much sooner on a coastal car. Rubber hose perishes and can also fail internally, where the lining lifts and forms a flap that lets pressure in but not out, leaving one brake permanently half-applied.
