Citroen C3 - Brake Calipers

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Brake Calipers for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Brake Calipers

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Brake Calipers for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Brake Calipers

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Brake Calipers for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Brake Calipers

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Brake Calipers for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Brake Calipers

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Brake Calipers for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Brake Calipers for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Brake Calipers for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Brake Calipers?

A caliper is a hydraulic clamp. Fluid pressure pushes a piston out of its bore, the piston squeezes the pads onto the disc, and a pair of slide pins lets the caliper float so both pads make even contact. It is the movement that fails, not the clamping. Three things stop a caliper moving freely in South African conditions: heat cycling that hardens the piston seal, coastal salt corroding the slide pins in their bores, and brake fluid left in past its life absorbing moisture and corroding the caliper from the inside out. Once the caliper stops sliding, one pad does all the work, that corner drags, and the heat starts damaging the disc as well.

Signs You Need New Brake Calipers

A firm pull to one side as soon as you touch the brakes
A hot wheel and a burnt smell after a short drive, which is a caliper dragging
Inner and outer pads worn to visibly different thicknesses
A pulse or judder through the pedal that was not there before
Brake fluid weeping around the piston dust boot or the bleed nipple
The car feeling as though a brake is on when you coast in neutral

Common Questions About Brake Calipers

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen brake caliper?

The range is wide because the parts are genuinely different. A C2 or C3 front caliper is a simple, affordable unit. A C3 Aircross or C5 rear caliper with an electronic parking brake motor built into it costs several times that, because you are buying an actuator as well as a caliper. We source Ferodo and OEM-specification units through our network β€” send the VIN and we will quote the right one rather than the cheapest one.

What are the symptoms of a sticking brake caliper?

A pull under braking, a burnt smell, one wheel noticeably hotter than the other three, and inner and outer pads at different thicknesses. Owner forums have long threads on rear caliper slide-pin seizure across the range, and it is the failure we see most often here β€” our combination of heat, coastal salt and brake fluid that rarely gets changed is close to ideal conditions for it.

Can a Citroen brake caliper be repaired or does it need replacing?

Often, yes. If the piston bore is clean, a seal kit and a new piston restores it properly and costs far less than a new caliper β€” this is standard work at any competent brake shop. What kills the repair is pitting: once the bore itself is corroded, no seal will hold against it. The exception is the C3 Aircross and C5 rear calipers with electronic parking brakes, where the motor and its seals are not supplied separately, so a full caliper is usually the only route.

Why does my Citroen pull to one side when braking?

Most commonly a seized slide pin or a piston that is not retracting β€” the healthy side clamps, the seized side does not, and the car turns toward the side that is working. Two other causes give the same symptom and cost far less to fix: brake fluid contaminated to the point of corroding a caliper bore, and a flexible hose that has collapsed internally and now acts as a one-way valve. Have all three checked before buying a caliper.

Where can I buy Citroen brake calipers in South Africa?

We supply new, used and reconditioned calipers nationally. VIN-matching genuinely matters here, because caliper size follows disc diameter and disc diameter follows engine and trim β€” two C3s of the same year can take different calipers. Tell us the chassis number and which corner, and we will quote same day. Where a rebuild is the better value, we will say so.
