What Are Brake Drums?
On the smaller Citroens β the C1, the C2 and the entry C3 grades β the rear brakes are drums rather than discs. A pair of curved shoes sits inside a cast iron drum and is pushed outward against its inner face by a wheel cylinder. Drums do relatively little of the stopping, since weight transfers forward under braking, but they carry almost all of the parking brake duty, and that is where the trouble starts. Inside every drum is an automatic adjuster that is supposed to take up shoe wear over time. When it seizes β and on these cars it does β the shoes sit too far from the drum, the handbrake travel grows, and the small contact area that remains scores the drum surface.

Common Questions About Brake Drums
How much does it cost to replace brake drums on a Citroen?
Drums for these models are among the more affordable brake parts, and Ferodo and OEM-specification units are readily available through our network. Budget two to three hours of labour for the pair, and insist that the job includes new shoes, fresh return springs and a serviced or replaced adjuster mechanism β fitting drums onto tired hardware is how the same fault returns within a year. Send the VIN for a quote.
What are the symptoms of worn brake drums?
Grooves worn into the drum's inner face give you a pulse through the pedal and a scraping or squealing noise that is worse in the wet. The handbrake becomes progressively less effective, which owners tend to notice on a driveway slope before they notice anything while driving. A seized automatic adjuster is very often the underlying cause rather than a symptom, so check that mechanism whenever a drum comes off.
Which Citroen models have rear drum brakes?
The C1, the C2 and the entry-level C3 grades run rear drums, along with base-specification Xsara. The larger and better-equipped cars β Xsara higher trims, C4, C5, C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross β moved to rear discs. Trim level matters as much as model here, so two cars of the same year and badge can differ. Check the VIN rather than assuming from the model name.
How long do Citroen brake drums last?
100,000 to 150,000 km is typical here, which is roughly twice the life of the shoes running inside them. That figure holds only while the automatic adjuster is doing its job β a seized adjuster concentrates all the braking on a small worn patch and scores the drum in a fraction of that time. The practical advice is simple: service the adjuster mechanism at every shoe change, and the drums will usually see out two sets of shoes.
Where can I buy Citroen brake drums in South Africa?
We source drums nationally, including Ferodo and OEM-specification units and good used items from specialist strippers. Drums for the C3 are usually common stock; the older C1 and C2 sizes more often need ordering in, which takes a few days rather than a few hours. Send the VIN and we will confirm availability and lead time before you commit to anything.
