Citroen C3 - Pressure Plate

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Pressure Plate for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Pressure Plate

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

Pressure Plate for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Pressure Plate

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Pressure Plate for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Pressure Plate

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Pressure Plate for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Pressure Plate

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Pressure Plate for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Pressure Plate for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

Pressure Plate for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

Citroen C1 - Pressure Plate

Citroen C1

Pressure Plate for C1 hatchback

A tiny city car sold here in small numbers. Low volume means franchised parts support dried up quickly, so used and aftermarket components are usually the only realistic route.

What Are Pressure Plate?

The pressure plate is the spring-loaded cover bolted to the flywheel that clamps the friction disc between them. Its clamping force comes from a diaphragm spring β€” a dished steel disc with fingers cut into the middle β€” and pressing the clutch pedal pushes those fingers inward, which levers the clamp off the disc. Everything about how a clutch feels comes from that diaphragm. Heat is what destroys it: a clutch that has been slipped hard gets the fingers hot enough to lose temper and distort, and once they are no longer flat the plate grips unevenly and the car judders as it pulls away.

Signs You Need New Pressure Plate

A judder or shudder as you release the clutch from rest
A biting point that has crept up to the top of the pedal travel
A burnt friction smell after traffic or a hill
Revs rising faster than the car accelerates
A rattle from the bellhousing at idle
Diaphragm fingers visibly bent, or heat-blued, once the box is out

Common Questions About Pressure Plate

How much does a Citroen pressure plate cost in South Africa?

It is normally bought as part of a kit rather than alone, and pricing is competitive locally β€” Valeo kits for the C5 run R3,500 to R4,500, and the Millennium kit covering the C2, Xsara and C5 is R2,895. Pro Citroen Spares and our supplier network stock both. Buying the plate separately is possible but rarely sensible, for the reason set out below.

What are the symptoms of a worn Citroen pressure plate?

Judder on take-off is the signature, and it is usually worse once the car is warm because heat is what distorted the diaphragm in the first place. Slipping under load and a burnt smell follow as the clamping force falls away. On the C3 and Xsara the cause is nearly always sustained hard clutch use rather than mileage β€” a city car worked hard gets there long before a highway car does.

Why is my Citroen juddering when pulling away?

Warped diaphragm fingers grip in stutters instead of progressively, so the disc grabs and releases as the plate settles. That is the common cause. The other one is contamination: oil from a weeping rear main or gearbox input seal reaching the friction face produces identical judder on a clutch that is otherwise fine. Both need the gearbox out, and if it is oil, that seal must be replaced or the new clutch goes the same way.

Can you replace just the pressure plate or do you need a full clutch kit?

Fit the full kit, every time. The plate, the friction disc and the release bearing have done identical work and are at identical points in their lives, so replacing one of three means the other two fail within a year and the gearbox comes out again. Since the labour dwarfs the parts and is the same either way, kit pricing beats piecemeal replacement by a wide margin.

How much does a Citroen clutch kit cost in SA?

Aftermarket kits for the C2, Xsara and C5 are around R2,086, with Valeo kits for the C5 at R3,500 to R4,500. Fitted at an independent, budget R5,950 to R10,500 all in. If your car has a dual-mass flywheel, have it measured while the gearbox is out and budget for the possibility of replacing it before you start rather than being surprised mid-job.
