Citroen C3 - Complete Gearbox/Transmission

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Complete Gearbox/Transmission for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Complete Gearbox/Transmission for DS3 hatchback

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Complete Gearbox/Transmission for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

What Are Complete Gearbox/Transmission?

A complete gearbox is everything in one casing: the gear sets, the synchronisers, the selector mechanism, the differential and the bellhousing. Citroen has used a manageable number of units here, which makes identification easier than owners expect. The manuals are the MA and BE five-speeds in the smaller cars and the ML6C six-speed behind the bigger diesels. On the automatic side there is the AL4 four-speed, known as the DP0, which is the one owners ask about most; the ETG automated manual, which is a manual gearbox with a robot working the clutch rather than a true automatic; and the Aisin-built six-speeds in the later cars. Each has its own reputation and its own repair path locally.

Signs You Need New Complete Gearbox/Transmission

A crunch going into second, which is the synchro rather than the clutch
A whine that rises and falls with road speed and ignores engine speed
Revs climbing without the car accelerating in one particular gear
Jerky or hesitant shifts from an automated-manual or automatic
Reverse or fifth refusing to engage while the rest select cleanly
A burnt smell or transmission fluid pooling below the bellhousing

Common Questions About Complete Gearbox/Transmission

How much does a Citroen gearbox replacement cost in South Africa?

It swings hugely with what you have. A used C2 or C3 manual from a strip yard is the cheapest route by a wide margin and is often the right answer on an older car. An automatic from a C5 Aircross is at the other end entirely. We source units nationally, and we will tell you which route makes sense rather than quoting the most expensive one β€” send the VIN.

What are the symptoms of a failing Citroen gearbox?

Grinding into gear, whining that follows road speed, one gear slipping while the rest hold, harsh engagement from the automated-manual boxes, and fluid on the driveway. Worth knowing before you panic: shudder as an ETG takes up drive is very often the clutch actuator rather than anything inside the gearbox, and that is a far smaller job. Diagnose before replacing.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a Citroen gearbox?

For the manual C2, C3 and Xsara boxes, a good used unit from a South African stripper is usually cheaper than a rebuild, because the labour to strip, measure and reassemble a manual box exceeds what a whole one costs. For the automatics the logic reverses β€” a specialist rebuild or a properly remanufactured unit beats a used box of unknown history, since you cannot inspect what you are buying. Scan the car first, then price both routes.

Which Citroen models have common gearbox problems?

The AL4 four-speed automatic, the DP0, is the headline case β€” PSA called its fluid fill-for-life and in practice that is why these boxes fail early, usually at the valve body and solenoids rather than in the gears. The ETG automated manual draws complaints about harsh low-speed shifts and clutch actuator wear, though much of that is how the system works rather than a fault. The Aisin six-speeds in the later cars are comparatively trouble-free. All of them have established repair paths through South African specialists.

Can I buy a used Citroen gearbox in South Africa?

Yes, and the used market here is healthier than the size of the local Citroen fleet suggests, because Citroen shares gearboxes with Peugeot across the range. That widens the pool considerably. We VIN-match on engine code, final drive ratio and gearbox code before anything ships, because a box that bolts on but has the wrong final drive will make the car feel wrong in every gear. Send the chassis number for current stock.
