What Are Torque Converter?

The torque converter is the fluid coupling in your Citroen automatic gearbox that transfers engine torque to the transmission and multiplies torque at low speeds. On 4-speed automatic/DP0 and AF40/TF80SC boxes common to Citroen C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross autos, we see shudder between 55 and 80km/h as the first warning of friction wear.

What are the symptoms of a failing Citroen torque converter?

Shudder at 55 to 80km/h under light throttle, slipping under acceleration, harsh shifts and a whine that rises with engine RPM. The shudder is the TCC (torque converter clutch) friction wearing out — early diagnosis can sometimes save the full replacement.

What is torque converter shudder and how do I fix it?

The lock-up clutch inside the converter is juddering rather than taking up cleanly. Caught early, a drain and fill with the correct-spec ATF will often restore smooth engagement. Left alone, the friction material wears right through and the whole converter has to be replaced.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen torque converter?

Labour dominates, because the gearbox has to come out to reach it. Rebuilding is the cheaper path: Maktrans and other SA specialists rebuild 4-speed automatic/DP0 converters for a fraction of new. Can a transmission fluid flush fix torque converter shudder?

It can, early on. Fresh correct-spec fluid gives the friction material something clean to grip, which often quiets TCC shudder for a while. Understand what that is though — a patch. Once the friction surface has gone, no amount of fluid brings it back. Get it scanned before spending anything.

Is a torque converter part of the gearbox on a Citroen?

It lives between the two: bolted to the flywheel at one end, slotted into the front of the transmission at the other. Because reaching it means dropping the gearbox anyway, we treat the whole assembly as one transmission job. Worth asking for both halves when you order spares.
