A single blade fuse is R50 to R100 at any accessory shop, and fitting one is a two-minute job you can do yourself with the puller clipped inside the fuse box lid. A complete replacement fuse box — the Xsara unit, for example — is around R727 through our network, and that is only needed where the box itself has been heat-damaged or a terminal has burnt out. Labour on the box is about fifteen minutes at any independent workshop.

One circuit stops working while everything around it stays live — a dead accessory socket, a radio that has lost its memory, indicators that will not click. The fuse itself gives you visual confirmation: pull it out and hold it up to the light, and a blown one shows a broken or blackened metal strip inside the plastic. Blackening rather than a clean break usually means a hard short rather than a gradual overload.

Because there is a short or an overload, and the fuse is telling you so. Never fit a higher rating to stop it — the fuse is protecting wiring that will otherwise become the weak point. On the C3 and Xsara the usual causes are wiring chafed where the loom passes through a door hinge, water in the boot loom, and a blower motor drawing excess current as its bearings tighten up. Trace the circuit before fitting the next fuse.

Pull it with the plastic puller clipped into the fuse box lid — never with pliers, which damage the blades. Hold it up against a light and look at the S-shaped metal strip inside: intact means good, broken or blackened means blown. If you cannot see clearly, a cheap circuit tester or a multimeter on continuity gives you a definite answer in seconds. Test rather than swap, because a good fuse swapped for another good fuse tells you nothing.
