Citroen C3 - ECU/PCM

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

ECU/PCM for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - ECU/PCM

Citroen C4

Fast Moving

ECU/PCM for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - ECU/PCM

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

ECU/PCM for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - ECU/PCM

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

ECU/PCM for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - ECU/PCM

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

ECU/PCM for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

ECU/PCM for C2 hatchback

A small three-door city car from the mid-2000s. Survivors are thin on the ground now, which is exactly why owners struggle to find parts through normal channels and end up phoning us.

ECU/PCM for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

ECU/PCM for C1 hatchback

What Are ECU/PCM?

The engine ECU is the computer that decides how much fuel goes in, when it burns, how much boost the turbo makes and what the emissions systems do about the result. It is a reliable piece of electronics in isolation. What kills them on Citroens is water. On the C2 and C3 the engine ECU sits low in the scuttle area behind the airbox, and the drains that are supposed to carry rainwater away from that tray block with leaves and grit. Once they do, the tray becomes a bath. The damage is rarely dramatic on the day β€” it starts as green copper corrosion creeping into the connector pins, and it produces faults that come and go with the weather long before anything fails outright.

Signs You Need New ECU/PCM

The engine refusing to start, or firing and dying immediately
Rough running or intermittent misfires with every sensor testing good
A scattering of unrelated warning lamps that appears after heavy rain
Limp mode arriving under load with no obvious mechanical cause
A scan tool that cannot establish communication on the engine protocol
Damp, or green corrosion on the pins, when the ECU connector is unplugged

Common Questions About ECU/PCM

How much does a Citroen ECU cost in South Africa?

Used and VIN-specific, a C3 1.2 PureTech ECU is around R4,500 and a 1.6 THP unit around R5,500 through our network. Repair, where the board is salvageable, sits nearer R3,167. Before you buy either, have the wiring and the earths checked β€” a corroded connector or a bad earth produces the same symptoms and costs a fraction to fix.

What are the symptoms of a faulty Citroen ECU?

No-start, erratic running, a spread of warning lamps that follows wet weather rather than mileage, and communication errors on a diagnostic scan. The timing is the useful clue: faults that appear after rain and clear after a dry week are water ingress, not electronics reaching the end of their life. On the C2 and C3, unplugging the connector and finding green corrosion on the pins confirms it in seconds.

Can a Citroen ECU be repaired or must it be replaced?

Repair is often the better route. Specialists here rebuild the PureTech, Xsara and THP units for around R3,167 and β€” the part that matters β€” keep your original coding, so the car does not need reprogramming to the immobiliser afterwards. What defeats a repair is corrosion that has eaten through the circuit tracks themselves rather than just the connector. In that case it is a replacement plus a coding session.

Does a replacement Citroen ECU need to be programmed?

Yes, always. New or used, the ECU has to be matched to the vehicle and synchronised with the BSI, the immobiliser and the keys, or the car will crank and refuse to start. This is routine work for a Citroen specialist with the correct diagnostic equipment, but it is not something to discover after the part has arrived. We match used units on exact part number to keep the coding as straightforward as possible.

What causes Citroen ECU water damage?

Blocked drains, in almost every case. The scuttle tray under the windscreen has drain channels that carry rainwater away; leaves, grit and pollen block them, the tray fills, and the water finds the ECU and the pollen filter housing. A perished windscreen seal does the same thing more slowly. Clearing those drains once a year takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and prevents the single most expensive electrical failure these cars suffer.
