Citroen C3 - Fuel Injectors

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Fuel Injectors for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Citroen C4 - Fuel Injectors

Citroen C4

Fuel Injectors for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Fuel Injectors

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Fuel Injectors for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Fuel Injectors

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Fuel Injectors for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus - Fuel Injectors

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Fuel Injectors for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Fuel Injectors for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Fuel Injectors?

An injector is a precision valve that has to open, deliver an exact quantity of atomised fuel and close again in a couple of milliseconds, thousands of times a minute, in a hostile environment. Citroen uses two quite different arrangements. The petrol engines β€” the 1.2 PureTech and the 1.6 THP β€” use port or direct injection at moderate pressure. The 1.6 and 2.0 HDi diesels use common-rail injectors working at pressures that would cut skin, with internal clearances measured in microns. That precision is why diesel injectors are so sensitive to fuel contamination, and why HDi injector faults are one of the most discussed subjects on any Citroen owner forum.

Signs You Need New Fuel Injectors

A lumpy idle, worst when the engine is cold
A misfire isolated to one cylinder with a P030x code stored against it
Black smoke from a diesel exhaust under acceleration
A diesel smell in the engine bay from an injector weeping at its seat
Long cranking before a diesel fires, especially after standing overnight
Consumption climbing, or limp mode arriving under load

Common Questions About Fuel Injectors

How much does a Citroen fuel injector cost in South Africa?

Petrol injectors for the C2 and C3 1.4 16V start around R450, with aftermarket units around R1,299 and performance units at R3,050 to R3,100. Used sets of four for the C3, Xsara and C5 start from R499, which on an older petrol car is often the sensible buy. Diesel common-rail injectors are a different order of cost entirely. Send the VIN and engine code for an exact quote.

What are the symptoms of a bad fuel injector?

Rough idle, a misfire on one cylinder, black smoke on a diesel, a fuel smell under the bonnet, hard starting and P030x codes. The 1.6 HDi injectors have a well-known failure pattern, and the good news is that it is properly diagnosable rather than a matter of opinion β€” a leak-back test measures how much fuel each injector returns to the tank, and the offending one stands out immediately. Insist on that test before anyone replaces a set.

How much does it cost to replace Citroen fuel injectors?

From R450 an injector on a C2 or C3 1.4 16V up to several thousand each for an HDi unit. Labour is typically two to three hours, plus ECU coding on the diesels. On a petrol engine it is generally worth doing all four together, because they have aged identically and a single new injector flowing differently to three old ones gives you an uneven engine. Quote per set rather than per part.

Can Citroen fuel injectors be cleaned instead of replaced?

On petrol port injectors, yes β€” ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing restores them properly, provided the nozzle itself is not damaged, and specialists in our network offer a clean-and-test service that reports the flow figures back to you. On HDi diesel injectors the answer is usually no: the common failures there are internal leakage past worn clearances and a needle sticking in its bore, and neither is a deposit problem that cleaning can address.

Do new Citroen diesel injectors need coding to the ECU?

Yes, always. Every HDi injector is individually flow-tested at manufacture and carries a calibration code laser-etched onto its body, and that code has to be entered into the ECU against the cylinder it is fitted to. Skip it and the ECU fuels on the previous injector's figures β€” the engine runs rough, smokes and can drop into limp mode. Any Citroen specialist with the correct diagnostic software handles this as part of the job.
