A used assembly through South African strippers generally lands between R250 and R850 for the C3 and Xsara. A latch-only repair is cheaper again, and on most of these cars it is the correct fix because the bin itself is undamaged. Send the VIN with a note of your interior trim colour — a mismatched grey is more obvious in a dashboard than people expect.

The latch tongue is a thin plastic hook that flexes every time the box is opened, and after enough cycles it fatigues and snaps. If it breaks while engaged, the remaining stub stays caught behind the striker and the lid is locked shut. The mistake to avoid at that point is forcing it — pulling hard usually cracks the hinge tabs and the surrounding dash trim too, and turns a cheap latch job into a whole assembly.

Slide a thin plastic trim tool down the gap at the side of the lid until it meets the latch tongue, then push the tongue sideways off the striker while pulling gently on the lid. It usually releases with very little force once you have found it. What you should not do is lever from underneath — the hinge tabs at the bottom are the weakest part of the moulding and they break easily.

On most C3 and Xsara units, yes — the latch is a separate module that unclips from the inside of the lid, and a latch kit costs a fraction of a complete glovebox. Worth weighing against it: a colour-matched second-hand lid from a stripper often costs little more and gives you fresh plastic throughout, including the hinge tabs, which are the same age as the latch that just failed.
