What Are Citroen Xsara Exhaust Gaskets?
An exhaust gasket has to seal a joint between two components that are at different temperatures, expanding at different rates, hundreds of times a day. That is a harder job than sealing a static joint, and it is why exhaust gaskets are consumables rather than fit-and-forget parts. The three that matter on a Citroen are head to manifold, manifold to catalyst or turbo, and downpipe to catalyst. On the 1.6 HDi and 1.6 THP the manifold gasket takes the worst of the thermal cycling. When it goes, the tell-tale is distinctive: a tick that is loud on a cold start and fades as the metal expands and closes the gap.

Common Questions About Citroen Xsara Exhaust Gaskets
How much does a Citroen exhaust gasket cost?
The gaskets themselves are inexpensive and our suppliers carry Citroen-fit units across the range. Labour is the entire story here and it varies enormously depending on which joint has failed β a downpipe-to-catalyst gasket is quick, a head-to-manifold gasket means stripping the manifold off a hot-side that has been baked in place for years. Send the VIN and tell us where the noise is coming from, and we will quote the actual job.
What are the symptoms of a blown exhaust gasket?
The cold-start tick that fades with warmth is the signature, and it is worth knowing because owners frequently mistake it for a noisy tappet or a worn lifter. The way to tell them apart costs nothing: listen at the manifold flange on a stone-cold start. A gasket leak is loud there and quiet at the cam cover. Alongside it look for soot around the flange and, on a turbo diesel, response that has gone lazy.
How much does it cost to replace a Citroen exhaust manifold gasket?
The gasket is cheap; the access is not. On the 1.6 HDi and 1.6 THP the manifold has to come off, which is typically three to four hours and carries a real risk of shearing a stud β budget for that possibility rather than being surprised by it. Conical mesh gaskets are the better choice for the joints that see the most movement. Send the VIN for a quote that includes the stud extraction contingency.
Can you drive a Citroen with a leaking exhaust gasket?
For a short while, yes, but there are three reasons not to leave it. Air leaking in upstream of the oxygen sensor makes the ECU read a lean mixture and add fuel it does not need, which costs consumption and can trigger limp mode. Exhaust in the engine bay can find its way into the cabin through the bulkhead. And on a turbo diesel, a leak between the head and the turbo means the turbo is not getting the energy it was designed around. Deal with it at the next service, sooner on an HDi.
Where can I buy Citroen exhaust gaskets in South Africa?
We source manifold, downpipe and catalyst gaskets nationally, and the 1.6 HDi and 1.6 THP sets are common stock. Order the flange bolts or studs with the gasket β they corrode into place and shear more often than they come out cleanly, and having replacements already on the bench is what keeps a three-hour job from becoming a two-day one. Send the VIN for an exact part match.
