A used shifter assembly starts around R500 for the older C2 units through our network. A full cable and linkage rebuild runs R1,500 to R4,650 fitted, and where you land inside that depends on whether the cables have stretched, the bushes have perished, or the shifter tower itself has cracked. Have it diagnosed rather than guessed — a bush kit and an hour of labour fixes a great many cars that were quoted for a whole assembly.

The shift goes sloppy or notchy, and reverse is usually the first gear to become awkward because it has the least synchronisation to help you. That combination points at the linkage rather than the gearbox. On the automatics — the Aisin six-speeds in the C3 Aircross and C5 — hesitation or a jolt between gears is a different animal entirely and points at the valve body or the fluid rather than anything in the cabin.

Nine times out of ten it is the plastic bushings in the linkage under the car rather than anything in the lever. They perish and go slack somewhere past 100,000 km, and once they do the lever flops in its socket even though the gearbox is perfectly healthy. A bush kit is inexpensive and the job is about an hour, which makes it one of the most satisfying cheap fixes on these cars — the shift feel comes back completely.

Lift the gaiter and the console surround and inspect the ball cup the lever pivots in. If that plastic has cracked, replace the shifter assembly — and replace both linkage bushings at the same time, even if they look serviceable. They are the same age, they are already worn, and leaving them in means the play returns within months and the new assembly wears prematurely against them. Doing all three together is the job.
