What Are Citroen DS4 Fuel Tanks?
The tank is slung under the rear floor, either pressed steel or moulded plastic depending on the model, and it is more than a container. It carries the in-tank pump and sender, the vapour recovery plumbing that stops fuel evaporating to atmosphere, and a filler neck that has to seal against a nozzle being jammed into it several hundred times a year. That filler neck is where most tank problems begin, particularly on the Dispatch and Relay vans where corrosion at the neck is a recognised weak point. On the Xsara HDi there is a separate and well-known complaint — fuel draining back to the tank overnight, which shows up as long cranking on the first start of the day.

How much does a Citroen fuel tank cost in South Africa?
Fuel supply components generally run R300 to R2,700, and used tanks themselves span R500 to R9,700 and beyond depending on the model and condition — a small hatchback tank and a Relay commercial tank are not remotely the same purchase. From around R500 for a good used C2 or C3 tank up to R10,000 and above for a new commercial tank on a Dispatch or Relay. Labour is three to four hours, and the first part of that is draining and safely storing whatever fuel is in the tank before it can be dropped — which is why filling up the day before you take a car in for this job is a mistake. What are the symptoms of a Citroen fuel tank leak?
A strong fuel smell under the car or seeping into the cabin, drips on the driveway that evaporate rather than pooling, a gauge that has started misreading, and rust staining around the filler or the tank seams. On the Dispatch and Relay, corrosion at the filler neck is the classic local failure and it is usually visible with a torch once the rear wheel arch liner is pulled back.
Can a leaking Citroen fuel tank be repaired?
Technically a plastic tank can be plastic-welded and a steel tank with pinhole rust can be patched, and you will find people who will do both. We do not recommend either. A patch addresses the hole you found while the rest of the tank is the same age and the same thickness, and the failure mode you are gambling with is fuel on a hot exhaust. It is also an automatic roadworthy failure. Replace it.
Why is fuel leaking from my Citroen when I fill up?
If it only leaks while filling, the problem is at the top of the system rather than the tank itself. The three candidates are a cracked filler neck, a perished rubber hose between the neck and the tank, and a blocked or failed vent line that stops the tank breathing so fuel backs up. All three are documented issues on the Dispatch, Relay and older Xsara HDi. Scan for EVAP codes and inspect the filler hose first — it is the cheapest of the three by a distance.
