The pair of warning lamps — ABS and handbrake — is nearly always the opening symptom. On the C3 and Xsara the usual root cause inside the unit is a corroded pump motor rather than the electronics themselves.

The Bosch 5.3 and ATE units used on the C2, C3 and Xsara are rebuilt routinely — typically by resoldering dry joints on the circuit board or replacing the pump motor, both of which are known failure points rather than mysteries. A rebuild is usually cheaper than a new unit and it keeps your original coding, which saves the programming session as well. Specialists doing this work exist locally and in the UK.

Most of the time it is not the module at all. A failed wheel-speed sensor, a cracked or contaminated tone ring, or a corroded connector accounts for the majority of ABS lights, and on the C3 the rear sensor wiring chafing where it passes the suspension is a recurring culprit. Those are cheap fixes. Only once the sensors, the tone rings and the wiring have all tested good is the module the likely suspect — which is why a scan and a proper live-data check comes before any parts are bought.
