Individual discs run R800 to R1,800 depending on the model and the brand. As a front pair, that is R1,600 to R3,000 for a C3 or C5 Aircross, and R2,400 to R4,500 for the heavier models. Genuine Citroen discs cost more and fit without argument; the established aftermarket brands are good value and widely available here. Since Citroen shares braking hardware with Peugeot across most of the range, disc availability is far better than the size of the local Citroen parc would suggest.

Between 50,000 and 80,000 km is typical, but that is an average of two very different lives. Highway-heavy cars can pass 100,000 km on a set. Cars living in Johannesburg or Durban traffic, braking constantly, come in well under. Coastal salt is worth its own allowance — corrosion on the unswept areas and hub face can pull disc life down by 20-30% even on a car that brakes gently. Discs get measured at every pad change, and that measurement is what actually tells you.

If the discs are being replaced, yes, always fit new pads with them. Old pads have worn to the profile of the old disc and will never make full contact with a new one, so you get reduced bite and both parts wear unevenly. The reverse is not true — new pads on healthy, in-specification discs is a normal and perfectly sound job. Most workshops quote the combination as one operation, with labour of R600 to R1,200 depending on the model.

Heat, mostly, and usually heat that had nowhere to go — a long descent on the brakes, or repeated hard stops without cooling between them. Two other causes are more avoidable. Wheel bolts done up with a rattle gun rather than a torque wrench distort the disc against the hub; Citroen specifications are generally in the 90-110 Nm range depending on model. And driving through standing water with the discs glowing will quench one area faster than another. Let the brakes cool before you wash the car, and insist the tyre shop uses a torque wrench.

Only if there is thickness to spare above the minimum figure stamped on the disc. Skimming costs R250 to R400 per disc and can save R500 to R800 an axle over replacement, so the sums work when the disc is thick and only lightly scored. The catch is that modern discs are thin to begin with, and many Citroen discs will take one skim at most. If the disc is heavily grooved, cracked around the vanes or already close to minimum, replacement is both safer and, once you count the second visit, usually cheaper.
