Flywheel for Citroen C5

What Are Citroen C5 Flywheel?

A flywheel does two jobs: it stores rotational energy so the engine turns smoothly between power strokes, and it gives the clutch a flat friction surface to grip. A diesel makes that first job much harder, because its combustion pulses are far more violent than a petrol's — which is why the 1.6 and 2.0 HDi run a dual-mass flywheel. A dual-mass unit is effectively two flywheels connected by heavy springs and a damper, absorbing torsional shock before it reaches the gearbox. It is the reason a modern diesel does not sound like a tractor from inside the cabin. It is also a wear item with a finite life, usually announcing itself around 150,000 km, and it is not a cheap one.

Signs You Need New Flywheel

A rattle from the bellhousing at idle that stops the moment you press the clutch
Vibration felt through the gear lever with the car in neutral
Judder as you take up drive, worst from cold
A metallic clank when the engine starts or shuts down
A rumble or grind from the gearbox area under light load
The clutch pedal buzzing under your foot as the engine pulls

Common Questions About Citroen C5 Flywheel

How much does a Citroen dual mass flywheel cost in South Africa?

A 2.0 HDi dual-mass unit for the shared Citroen and Peugeot engines runs around R11,600, with SACHS and OEM-specification units stocked across our network. That is the part alone. The labour is substantial because the gearbox has to come out, which is precisely why it should never be done in isolation from the clutch — send the VIN and we will quote the whole job rather than the headline part.

What are the symptoms of a failing dual mass flywheel?

The diagnostic one is a rattle from the bellhousing at idle that goes silent the instant you press the clutch pedal, because pressing the clutch unloads the springs inside the unit. Alongside that: judder on take-up, vibration through the gear lever in neutral, and a metallic clank at shutdown. The 1.6 and 2.0 HDi engines in the C3, Xsara, C5 and C3 Aircross are where we see it most.

How much does it cost to replace a Citroen flywheel?

Around R11,600 for a 2.0 HDi dual-mass unit, plus six to eight hours of labour. Add a matched clutch kit, a new release bearing and a new rear main oil seal while everything is apart — all three are cheap relative to the labour and all three will otherwise have you back inside a year. This is a job where the sensible approach is to replace everything the gearbox has to come out for, once.

Can a Citroen dual mass flywheel be repaired?

No. The springs and friction dampers are sealed inside the assembly and there is no serviceable path into it. Solid-mass conversion kits exist for some HDi applications and they are cheaper, but they hand the torsional shock straight to the gearbox — you get more vibration through the cabin and more load on the gearbox input shaft and synchros. For a road car we recommend replacing like for like.

Should I replace my flywheel when changing the clutch?

On a dual-mass car past 150,000 km, yes, without hesitation. The labour is identical either way and a tired flywheel will chew through a new clutch in months, meaning you pay the entire labour bill a second time. The answer differs for the older petrols — a solid flywheel on a C2 or Xsara can be skimmed and reused, provided the surface is clean, flat and within thickness. Have it measured rather than assumed.
