Front lower control-arm bushes, anti-roll bar drop links and shock absorbers, in that order. Our roads work the front end far harder than the rear, and rubber bushings degrade from heat and repeated impact rather than mileage alone. Shock absorbers typically run R1,150-R2,350 each and a full front-end refresh with arms, links and bushes generally lands in the R8,400-R14,100 range. On a C5 with Hydractive suspension the diagnosis is different — a car sitting low or slow to rise is usually spheres or a height sensor rather than anything conventional.

Bushings and drop links go first, often by 60,000-80,000 km on South African roads, and they are the cheap end of the job. Shock absorbers follow, usually 80,000-100,000 km. Ball joints and tie rod ends wear more slowly unless the car spends real time on gravel. Coil springs rarely fail outright but do sag and occasionally crack, so they are worth eyeballing whenever the strut is off the car. Getting the cheap items done early is what stops them destroying the expensive ones.

For most of the range, yes. Citroen shares suspension architecture with Peugeot, so arms, links, bushes and shocks cross-reference widely and we can usually source new, aftermarket or good used within a few days anywhere in the country. The exceptions are the hydraulic systems — Hydractive spheres for the C5 and the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion dampers on the C5 Aircross are genuinely specialist and take longer to find. Springs carry the weight of the car. Dampers, whether separate shocks or built into a strut, control how the springs move so the body settles instead of bouncing. Linkages — control arms, ball joints and tie rods — locate the wheel and let it move through its travel while staying pointed the right way. Anti-roll bars tie the two sides of an axle together to limit body roll in corners. Tyres and their pressures are the unofficial fifth component, and the cheapest one to get right.

An inspection typically runs R800-R1,500, front shock absorbers with fitting somewhere around R3,400-R5,800, and a comprehensive overhaul with shocks, arm bushes, drop links and ball joints in the R11,650-R24,500 range depending on the model and how far it has gone. Most owners phase it: do the knocking items first, do the shocks next, and always have the geometry set afterwards. An alignment after suspension work is not an upsell — without it, new parts wear out tyres.
