In most cases it is the F7 or F9 fuse, a blown festoon bulb, or a door switch stuck in the closed position so the car believes every door is shut. Check the fuse first because it costs nothing to look. On the Xsara and C3 Aircross there is one more possibility worth knowing: the BSI shunt fuse, which is deliberately pulled during transport and storage, determines whether the cabin lighting wakes at all.

A festoon or wedge bulb is R50 to R200 at any parts counter, and fitting one is a ten-minute job at a workshop or a five-minute one at home. On most C3, Xsara and C3 Aircross models, F7 feeds the front and rear roof lamps and the glovebox light, while F9 covers the remaining interior lighting. Check the diagram inside your own fuse box lid rather than relying on that, because the allocation changed across model years. Separately, the BSI shunt fuse controls whether the whole cabin lighting system stays armed when the car is left standing.

Find the notch moulded into one edge of the lens and ease a plastic trim tool into it — the lens unclips rather than unscrews. Pull the festoon or wedge bulb straight out, fit the replacement without touching the glass with bare fingers, and press the lens back until it clicks. A plastic trim stick is the only tool needed; a screwdriver will mark the lens permanently on the first attempt.
